saving a inch worm

Yesturday my boyfriend and I were outside cleaning up our lawn mower when he noticed this little guy on his arm.

Of course I let him crawl onto my finger and moved him to where some long grass.

I was surprised how good this picture I took came out😂 #nature #outside #Lemon8Diary #lemon8contest #AskLemon8

... Read moreYou know, finding that little green inchworm yesterday really made my day! It got me thinking about how often we overlook the tiny wonders right in our backyards. If you've ever spotted one of these fascinating creatures, you probably know they're pretty unique. First off, for those wondering what an inchworm actually is, they're not really 'worms' at all! They're actually the larval stage of moths, typically from the Geometridae family. So, when some search for 'ларва' (larva), that's exactly what an inchworm is – a caterpillar! Their name comes from their distinctive way of moving. Instead of slithering like a typical caterpillar, they 'loop' or 'inch' their way along, bringing their rear prolegs up to meet their front legs, creating an arch, then extending forward again. It's truly mesmerizing to watch them 'inchworm crawling' across a surface. I often find these 'green inchworm on leaf' in my garden, especially on plants like oak, maple, or fruit trees. Their brilliant green color provides perfect camouflage, making them almost invisible against the vibrant green leaves they munch on. That's probably why an 'inchworm on leaf close up' photo can be so captivating – it's a chance to really appreciate their intricate details that you might miss otherwise. I've spent ages just watching them, sometimes even with a magnifying glass (my simple 'instrument' for nature observation!), trying to get a better look at their tiny heads and segments. Speaking of watching, if you ever find one and want to do a little 'worm saving' like I did yesterday, it's pretty simple. They're harmless and quite delicate. The best way is to gently let them crawl onto your finger or a small stick, and then move them to a safe spot with plenty of their preferred foliage. Avoid direct sunlight or very dry spots. They're just looking for a good leaf to snack on and a safe place to continue their life cycle. Now, about some of those other questions people might have. I've seen searches for 'itchy inchworm,' and while some caterpillars can cause skin irritation, inchworms generally aren't known for making you itchy. They don't have stinging hairs like some other species. Of course, it's always good practice to handle any wild creature gently and wash your hands afterward. My experience yesterday, moving that little guy from the lawnmower area to some tall grass, was a small act of kindness that felt really good. It's a reminder that even the smallest creatures play a vital role in our ecosystem. Next time you're outside, take a moment to look closely – you might just spot a 'light green inchworm crawling on a vibrant green leaf' and have your own little nature moment!
