prevent candle tunneling~ let the candle burn from corner to corner. When the candle tunnels your candle burns faster then it should and you'll end up with a unburned wax.
Not cutting the wicks~ creates black smoke and leaves debris in the candle. This also creates the black smoke ring around the candle
use the lid to put out the candle. Prevents accidentally fires.
store your candles in a cool place. Also try not to overly light your candles. You want to give the glass a chance to cool down and the wax to settle.
