Racial justice is also immigration justice.

It is time for judges in immigration courts to act with courage and awareness. We can no longer ignore that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) practices often perpetuate structural racism, especially against Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities.

We demand that judges use their authority and position to:

1)Create legal and procedural protection plans for immigrants, especially those most vulnerable due to their race, language, or socioeconomic status.

2)Develop strategies to help immigrants safely navigate and, when necessary, physically escape harmful court processes to avoid capture by ICE agents.

3)Reject automatic collaboration with ICE, especially when there is evidence of racial profiling or detentions without due process.

4)Promote transparency and publicly denounce practices that violate human rights inside and outside their courtrooms.

Impartiality is not neutrality in the face of injustice.

True justice demands action.

... Read moreRacial justice is intertwined with immigration justice, as discriminatory practices by ICE disproportionately affect Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities. Judges are urged to take informed actions against these injustices by implementing protective measures for immigrants at risk. Establishing clear legal paths for the most vulnerable due to their race, socioeconomic challenges, or language barriers is essential. Moreover, it is crucial for judges to develop strategies that empower immigrants to navigate complex court processes safely. This includes rejecting automatic collaborations with ICE that disregard the need for due process and potentially escalate the racial profiling of immigrants. Calls for transparency and accountability in the justice system are vital. Judges must publicly denounce practices that could violate human rights, reinforcing the idea that true impartiality cannot exist amidst systemic injustice. The demand for actions to combat these issues emphasizes the legal framework's role in ensuring a fairer system for all individuals, promoting a culture of respect and human dignity within the immigration courts.

Blocked by Bias, Not Merit
When promotions get blocked for qualified officers—2 Black men and 2 women—it raises serious questions about what “merit” really means in leadership spaces. This isn’t about standards, it’s about who’s allowed to rise and who’s kept in place. Bias doesn’t always shout—it moves in silence, behind cl
