Braids can protect your natural hair and promote growth when cared for properly, but leaving them in for too long may cause issues like buildup, scalp itching, or hair breakage. At around the six-week mark, you might notice your hairline feeling tight or some itching, which are common signals that it's time to take down your braids. Removing them timely helps prevent excess tension that could lead to traction alopecia, a condition caused by prolonged pulling on hair roots. During these weeks, it's helpful to keep your scalp moisturized using light oils or scalp sprays designed for braided hair. Also, gently cleansing your scalp every week with diluted shampoo or cleansing sprays helps reduce product buildup and keeps your scalp healthy. When you do remove your braids, take the opportunity to deep condition your hair thoroughly. This rehydrates and strengthens strands that may have been under stress. Additionally, giving your hair a break between braiding sessions allows it to breathe and recover. From my experience, following this approach ensures that wearing braids remains a positive and protective style choice, maintaining your hair's health and appearance over time.
