Non-Fiction Must Read
This book took me FOREVER to finish reading! It has SO MUCH information in it so it’s definitely worth it though. I only struggled because I’m the worst with dates but if you’re a history buff you’ll definitely get your fill.
The author did such an amazing job researching & compiling a detailed expose of race & racism in this country.

I know I mentioned this book took me ages to get through, but honestly, every single page was worth the effort! For anyone looking for a deep dive into the history of racist and antiracist ideas in America, this is absolutely it. It's not just a chronology of events; it’s a brilliant exploration of how these ideas were born, evolved, and continue to shape our world. What I found most compelling is how the authors break down the different perspectives throughout history – the segregationists, the assimilationists, and the antiracists. It really makes you think about how these ideologies manifest, not just in grand historical movements, but in everyday actions and beliefs. It challenged my understanding of what 'racism' truly means and how subtly it can be ingrained in our systems and even our own thoughts. You learn that simply not being racist isn’t enough; being antiracist requires active work and constant re-evaluation. The book also highlights pivotal figures and moments, showing how individuals like Frederick Douglass bravely fought against the dehumanizing idea of people as 'chattel' or mere 'pieces of property.' Seeing these historical struggles laid out so clearly really emphasizes the long and arduous journey towards equality. It's a powerful reminder that 'reading enriches the mind,' especially when it comes to understanding such a critical subject that continues to impact us today. If you're like me and sometimes struggle with dense historical texts, take your time with this one. It's not a light read, but the information is so vital and presented in such an engaging way that it truly sticks with you. Getting a summary of 'Stamped' doesn't quite do it justice because the experience of reading it, of grappling with these complex ideas, is where the real transformation happens. It’s a book that will absolutely change how you view history, society, and your own role in building a more just future.
