Tulum, Mexico

So I work for an airline and noticed that we recently started flying to a new destination that I had never heard of. We opened up our Tulum, Mexico destination just a few months back and so it’s still a hidden gem!

In the summer Cancun and Cozumel are super popular and I didn’t want to go to a super expensive resort only destination so I picked Tulum!

🤔Cons: Tulum really only has like 3 things about it. Lots of cenotes (underwater caves), the jungle (Mayan Ruins/temples, and more cenotes), and the beach. But! It’s cheap, VERY FRIENDLY, and very walkable.

👍Pros: I was able to get an Airbnb for 3 nights for $120 (USD). The Airbnb had bicycles, mopeds, and ATVs to rent for $10 a day.

👍Pros: I felt very safe, everybody was really friendly, there were lots of opportunities to gift shop, eat fun local foods, and have LOTS of fun cocktails! I probably spent ~1000 pesos a day ($53 USD). This included drinks, 2 meals and snacks every day.

There are lots of tourist traps though. The big flashy and picture worthy restaurants on the main strip would charge like $30 for a small meal and cocktail but do a bit more walking and you’d find a better place with better drinks and food for ~$10. Pick your battles 🤷🏼‍♀️

I would definitely go again knowing what I know now, but overall a really enjoyable place✨

... Read moreTulum, located on Mexico's Caribbean coast, is a rising star in travel destinations, known for its stunning beaches and rich culture. The town is famous for its cenotes, natural swimming holes formed from limestone sinkholes. These underground rivers provide a unique swimming experience and many are perfect for cliff jumping. Tulum’s cenotes can easily be accessed through local tours or by renting a bicycle. Aside from cenotes, visitors can explore the nearby Mayan ruins, which offer a glimpse into the region's ancient history. The archaeological site located on a cliff overlooking the sea is a must-see. For those looking to immerse themselves in nature, Tulum's lush jungles provide opportunities for horseback riding and ziplining through the treetops. As for dining, Tulum boasts a vibrant food scene. While it’s easy to fall into tourist traps with overpriced meals, walking a bit further from the main strip can lead to authentic local eateries where meals are delicious and budget-friendly. On average, travelers can enjoy local cuisine along with refreshing cocktails for a fraction of what they might pay at more commercial venues. Whether it's lounging on pristine beaches, exploring mystical underwater caves, or engaging with the friendly local community, Tulum offers a laid-back atmosphere that travelers crave. It's the perfect destination for those seeking adventure without a hefty price tag while embracing the joy of wanderlust.

Tulum Mexico
Tulum was originally known as "Zama," which means "City of Dawn" in Mayan, due to its position facing east across the Caribbean Sea. Its current name, "Tulum," means "wall" or "fortress" in Mayan, a reference to the large wall that surrounds the ancient city.
