Going to Ireland? Go here instead of Dublin…..

Some of you might already know about this place but it completely blew me away the first time I went.

Howth is an old seaside port in Ireland! It’s easily accessible from Dublin via train and it isn’t expensive at all for a round trip for the day. I went in October and so I was wearing a sweatshirt and a pair of sneakers because of the sea breeze. We probably hiked around 10km? It was a nice sizable hike around the peninsula.

There were plenty of cute cafes and restaurants as well but we were more focused on completing our hike! There’s also cute airbnbs and bed and breakfasts if you did want to stay overnight.

The town was founded in the 14th century and so it was fun to play “I Spy” for landmarks or buildings from that era. Overall, a lovely place for a day trip!

... Read moreWhen you're ready to escape the city, the Howth Summit trail offers an incredible adventure. From the moment you step off the DART, you can feel the fresh sea air. The main cliff walk, which leads you right up to the Howth Summit viewpoint, is truly spectacular. I remember seeing the vast, rugged coastline unfold before me, with green cliffs plunging into the turquoise sea. There are well-marked paths, but also little detours you can take for even more dramatic views of rocky outcrops and the distant lighthouse. It's not an overly strenuous hike, but certainly enough to feel like you've earned your scenic reward. I wore my trusty sneakers, which were perfect for navigating the varied terrain, from grassy paths to slightly rocky sections. Don't forget to pack water and maybe a snack to enjoy at one of the many breathtaking spots along the way. The feeling of reaching the Summit and looking out over Dublin Bay is just unbeatable; it makes you appreciate the raw, natural beauty so close to the city. Getting to Howth from Dublin city center couldn't be simpler, which is why it's such a popular choice for a day trip. The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) train is your best friend here. You can catch it from several central stations like Tara Street, Pearse, or Connolly. The journey itself is part of the experience, offering lovely coastal views as you head north. It typically takes about 30 minutes, making it a quick and convenient escape. A round-trip ticket is very affordable, especially if you get a Leap Card for public transport, and trains run frequently throughout the day. I'd recommend checking the DART schedule beforehand to plan your day, especially if you want to catch a sunset view from the Summit. This accessibility is a huge plus, allowing you to maximize your time exploring without worrying about parking or traffic. While Dublin boasts its own kind of charm with its historic buildings and bustling streets, if you're truly seeking breathtaking Dublin Ireland scenery that's wild and untamed, Howth is the place to go. It offers a completely different vibe, a serene escape dominated by nature. Beyond the famous cliff walk, exploring the town itself reveals charming, colorful terraced houses and the solemn beauty of a historic stone church tower. The lush green and brown vegetation clinging to the cliffs creates a vibrant contrast against the deep blue-green sea. You might even spot a serene beach perfect for a moment of quiet reflection or even some shell collecting. It's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in the natural world, away from the urban hustle. My October visit provided crisp air and stunning autumnal hues, making it feel extra special. Whether you're a keen hiker or just looking for a picturesque stroll, Howth provides an abundance of visual delights that stand out as some of the most beautiful Dublin has to offer in its surrounding areas.
