Amsterdam…in 48 hours!

So I had a few days off and said why not go to the Netherlands for 2 days???

First and foremost, what an absolute pleasure it is to be able to visit such a fun and unique city. Absolutely loved it. The people, the food, the fashion, THE ARCHITECTURE, their passion for their history and their language, just everything.

But! If on a time crunch…

1. Eat fun street foods! Try something you’ve always wanted to try or something you’ve never had before (Kapsalon, fresh stroopwafels, poffertjes, bitterballen)

2. Do a boat tour. Tacky, maybe too touristy, but nonetheless, SO MUCH FUN and so worth it. They do such a good job of exploring the canals and going into depth about Dutch history. Plus the views are so worth it.

3. If you’re staying at a hostel (I always prefer hostels bc they’re cheaper and you get to meet people your age group and so you have a travel buddy for however long), be social. Go out and make a friend. If in a room with other people, make the first move and talk to them. They’re exploring just like you are and so it’s always fun to share the adventure! Plus you never know who you’re gonna meet. I happened to meet my best friend Romina in my short 48 hours there!

4. You can do red light district but bc it’s a tourist trap, know that prices will be higher. They always can spot a tourist from miles away and so be careful not to carry too much cash. Money does not go as far as you’d like in Amsterdam😅

5. Take the train! They are fast and reliable. Amsterdam is fun but go check out a neighboring city or town for an hour or two and catch lunch and then come back to your hostel. My confidence alone has grown so much due to taking trains.

Overall, HAVE FUN and BE SAFE !!

... Read moreSpending just 48 hours in Amsterdam might seem like a challenge, but believe me, it’s absolutely possible to soak in the magic of this unique city and create lasting memories! As someone who recently did it, I can tell you the key is to embrace the experience fully and strategically. Here’s how I made the most of my whirlwind adventure, with some extra tips I picked up along the way. First, let's talk about the incredible food scene. While the original list mentioned a few classics, I highly recommend dedicating some time to exploring the vibrant street food culture. Beyond the fresh stroopwafels and savory bitterballen, keep an eye out for a street vendor making poffertjes right in front of you. There’s nothing quite like those warm, fluffy mini pancakes dusted with powdered sugar, or drizzled with chocolate! I also discovered that a quick herring sandwich (haring) from a street stall might sound adventurous, but it's a true local experience that’s surprisingly delicious. Don't forget to try some authentic Dutch fries (patat) with a variety of sauces – my favorite was the classic 'fritesaus'. When it comes to seeing the iconic canals, a boat tour is indeed a fantastic way to quickly grasp the city's layout and history. But don't just stop there! I found that exploring the city on foot or by renting a bike (Amsterdam's true mode of transport!) allowed me to appreciate the stunning architecture up close. Wander through charming neighborhoods like the Jordaan, getting lost in its narrow streets and discovering hidden courtyards. Every corner reveals a new picturesque view of traditional buildings, bridges, and houseboats. Even if you're not going inside every museum, a walk past the Rijksmuseum or Anne Frank House gives you a sense of their historical significance. Connecting with people can truly elevate a short trip. If you're staying in a hostel, make that extra effort to introduce yourself. I met some incredible people in my dorm, and we ended up sharing dinner and exploring parts of the city together. Beyond hostels, consider joining a free walking tour. They’re often led by locals or passionate travelers, offering insights you wouldn't find in a guidebook, and they're a great way to meet fellow adventurers. Engaging in conversations with shop owners or cafe baristas can also lead to wonderful, authentic recommendations. Public transport in Amsterdam and the Netherlands is incredibly efficient, as mentioned. Taking the train is not only fast and reliable but also offers a chance to see a bit more of the country. With just 48 hours, a short train ride to a nearby gem like Haarlem can be a delightful addition. It's a charming city with beautiful architecture, a magnificent church, and a more relaxed vibe than central Amsterdam. You can easily spend an hour or two there, grab lunch, and be back in Amsterdam in time for evening activities. It really broadened my perspective on Dutch life beyond just the capital. Finally, while the Red Light District can be interesting to see, remember it's a tourist trap and prices for anything there will be inflated. My experience confirmed that it's important to be aware of your surroundings and avoid carrying excessive cash, as pickpockets can be common in crowded tourist areas. For evening entertainment, I found cozy 'brown cafes' (traditional Dutch pubs) to be a much more authentic and enjoyable experience for soaking in the local atmosphere. Safety is always paramount, so trust your instincts and always have a way to get back to your accommodation. Have fun and embrace every moment of your Amsterdam adventure!
