Boston in the Fall
I recently had a layover in one of America’s oldest cities! It was the perfect time to visit Boston because it’s early fall and so the weather was perfect! It also wasn’t super crowded with tourists like it is in the Summer.
Because it is such a small city, it’s very easy to see the whole city in a day or two. Another flight attendant I was with and I walked everywhere and we both agreed that it was a very easy city to navigate. We rarely had to use Google Maps. There are a lot of buildings to use as landmarks and making it easy to make it back to your hotel or airbnb.
I do recommend going to a bar in Boston, even if you don’t drink. Just to pop in and look at all the memorabilia on the walls or to grab a soda. While you’re there you have to grab a lobster roll or as they say, “lobstuh” and maybe some clam chowder as well.
There are a lot of walkable historical areas as well. There’s the Holocaust Memorial that has names of 6 million people who perished. It’s a very unique memorial because steam is used to give you a sense of “showers” like they endured. There’s also the State House where the Boston Massacre occurred. Not all history is pretty but I will say it’s important. There’s also the harbor of course and it’s beautiful. The lights on the ships and sails are magnificent.
We walked maybe 8 miles that day? But it was all flat and so it wasn’t very tiring. We would stop along the way at coffee shops like Tatte and grab fresh pastries and coffees! Also did lots of shopping along the strip.
We ended our day at the Boston Common park where you can see lots of dogs, street performers, the statues of the ducks, a pond, and the infamous bench from Good Will Hunting. Overall, a wonderful city!
One place that really stood out, especially while exploring the historic streets, was stumbling upon The Bell in Hand Tavern. You know, the one mentioned in the OCR! Even though I was just popping in for the atmosphere (and maybe a quick soda!), the vibe was truly something else. It truly adds a unique touch to any Boston itinerary, whether you're a history buff or just looking for a cool spot to soak in the local flavor. Its prime location near Faneuil Hall and the Old State House makes it a perfect, convenient stop as you wander Boston's iconic Freedom Trail. While you're in the area, taking a moment to admire the majestic Old State House, with its distinctive clock and golden lion and unicorn statues, really grounds you in Boston's rich past. It's fascinating how this city so seamlessly blends its deep historical roots with bustling modern life. And speaking of local delights, after all that walking and historical immersion, what's better than indulging in some quintessential Boston treats? My personal must-try was a Pauli's extra butter lobster roll – trust me, the 'extra butter' makes all the difference, it’s pure heaven and a true taste of New England. For those looking for a different kind of quick, delicious bite, I also heard rave reviews about Ernesto's Pizza, a local favorite that's perfect for refueling. Beyond the historic taverns and mouth-watering food, Boston in the fall truly beckons you to explore its unique nooks and crannies. I absolutely loved browsing through the outdoor stalls of The Brattle Book Shop. Picture this: crisp autumn air, stacks of old prints and fascinating books, and the gentle rustle of falling leaves – it’s a bibliophile’s dream and a wonderful way to spend an hour or two. And of course, no trip to Boston in the fall is complete without a leisurely stroll through Boston Common. Passing the grand George Washington equestrian statue and trying to spot that famous bench from Good Will Hunting perfectly caps off a day of exploration. It's these layered discoveries, from ancient taverns to literary havens and iconic movie spots, that make a Boston trip so incredibly unforgettable, especially during the crisp, colorful fall season.
