Here’s just a little glimpse of what holidays away from home looks like as a US based flight attendant✈️
I couldn’t escape working the holidays but at least I was able to choose (sorta) where I could go! I ended up working a lovely flight over to San Francisco to be there for the day of Thanksgiving and the day after. I was really fortunate to be able to have a 30 hour layover (usually they’re like 14 hours or less).
I slept all day in my hotel room when we got back from flying and so the next day was my day to adventure! I explored the pier and got some chowder but I was ready to hit the streets and do some shopping. My hotel was like a 15 minute walk from Chinatown so it wasn’t too bad of a walk. But I got some Christmas shopping out of the way, grabbed some snacks and even ran into a friend who was visiting a gf. Talk about a small world.
But I ate some sweet bread (not pictured bc I ate it immediately), talked to some locals about some art, went to a few different groceries and outdoor markets, found some silk for a gift, ended up walking like 10 miles, finished the day with a meal :)
The next day was ROUGH bc we got stuck in Philly bc of a snow storm and we had to get rerouted thought Florida and it turned into a 4 day. But overall it was a lovely trip 10/10 would do it again.

However, turning work trips into mini-adventures can make the experience rewarding. During a 30-hour layover in San Francisco on Thanksgiving, I had the chance to dive into the city’s festive vibe despite a packed schedule.
One of the highlights was exploring San Francisco’s vibrant Chinatown on foot. Walking approximately 8 to 10 miles, I absorbed the sights, sounds, and tastes of this historic neighborhood. Trying street foods like tanghulu—sweet candied fruit skewers—offered a delightful snack while watching local street performers sing traditional songs added an authentic cultural touch. Exploring various outdoor markets and grocery stores in Chinatown provided great opportunities to find unique gifts like silk for Christmas presents and to interact with friendly locals.
San Francisco's iconic landmarks, such as the Transamerica Pyramid and the bustling piers, also left me with lasting impressions. The day ended with some comforting chowder and a quiet meal, a perfect way to rest after a long day of walking and shopping. Though unexpected travel delays due to a snowstorm changed my return route and extended the trip, these unforeseen moments often create memorable stories.
If you ever find yourself working or traveling through San Francisco during the holidays, take advantage of any spare time to explore neighborhoods like Chinatown. Their rich culture, festive holiday decorations, and delicious street food can transform a short stopover into a personal celebration. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, carry a camera to capture street art and the city's unique ambiance, and keep an open mind to speak with locals—they often hold the best travel tips and stories.
Overall, balancing work with leisure while traveling isn’t easy, but making the most of your surroundings can turn a routine trip into a cherished memory. Thanksgiving in San Francisco as a flight attendant may be a different kind of holiday, but embracing the city’s charm and festive spirit made it truly special.
