Their arrogance cost me my hearing!
I rushed to the ER after waking up completely deaf in one ear. I got stuck with a young and super arrogant doctor, all he noticed was my scuba diving tee. He blamed my hearing loss on diving, even though I told him I hadn’t done that in over a year.
He didn’t care about a thing I said and claimed it’d fix itself. Refused to consider any other cause. Spoiler: it wasn’t diving. I had sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), the only shot at saving my hearing is immediate steroids. Now I’ll never hear out of that ear again.
That doctor could’ve saved it if he wasn’t so busy playing know-it-all. Isn’t humility a basic medical skill? Why do some docs think they have all the answers without listening to patients?
Experiencing sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) can be alarming and requires immediate medical attention. SSHL is a rapid loss of hearing, often in one ear, and can happen over a period of hours to days. The crucial factor in managing SSHL is prompt treatment, most commonly with corticosteroids, which can help reduce inner ear inflammation and improve the chances of hearing recovery if administered early enough. Many people may not realize how easily SSHL can be misdiagnosed or dismissed, especially when medical professionals rely heavily on assumptions rather than listening carefully to patient symptoms and histories. In cases like this, doctors’ arrogance or a failure to keep an open mind can delay critical treatment and cause irreversible damage. It’s important for patients to advocate for themselves and seek a second opinion if their concerns are trivialized or ignored. Physicians should practice humility and thoroughness, integrating patient input with clinical knowledge to avoid harmful oversights. Additionally, external factors like wearing distinctive clothing (e.g., scuba diving tees) should never overshadow the clinical evaluation. While scuba diving can sometimes lead to ear issues such as barotrauma, sudden deafness after a long period without diving likely signals a different underlying cause. If you ever experience sudden hearing loss, do not wait for symptoms to improve on their own. Visit an ENT specialist promptly and ask about steroid treatment options. Early intervention can be the difference between full recovery and permanent hearing impairment. Remember, the relationship between patients and doctors should be built on trust, respect, and active listening. Medical arrogance, as highlighted by the patient’s story, can have serious consequences, and healthcare providers must prioritize empathy and evidence-based care to ensure the best outcomes.

I’ve had issues with this in the past & it pissed me off so bad.. like this isn’t a game .. why are you playing with people’s lives !??
