Free winter activities in Chicago 🤍

Christkindlmarket Chicago

This is me and my bfs 3rd time going and it’s our favorite thing to do we love walking around and seeing what all the stands have to sell! Every year we get hot chocolate which come with the option of coming in the holiday mugs this year they had 2, they had a nutcracker which was the one shown and a Christmas boot with a mural of the market. Last year I believe it was a penguin and now it’s become tradition that we collect each one! After also exploring for a couple years now I can definitely recommend being hand warmer!!!! And water resistant boots !! If you double layer even better!

Chicago Christmas Tree

While visiting the market we also make time to go see the Christmas tree! It’s located right in Millenium Park. It’s absolutely gorgeous and so mesmerizing I love taking pictures each year of the tree and I get so excited when it gets closer to this time of year to see the tree and seeing what color the lights will be! The tree and market are within walking distance so we like to park underneath in the parking garage and walk around the city but again layer up!! It’s always cold so definitely come prepared!!!

... Read moreIt's so true, there's just something magical about Chicago in December, and the best part is, you don't have to break the bank to enjoy it! My boyfriend and I have made it a tradition to explore the city's wonderful free winter activities, and I'm excited to share more of our go-to spots and tips to make your visit even better. Beyond the amazing Christkindlmarket and the breathtaking MILLENNIUM PARK Christmas tree (which, as the OCR noted, is truly HUGE and FREE to enter!), there's so much more to discover. For instance, just wandering through the market, even if you're not buying, is an experience in itself. The air is filled with festive scents, and the buzz of people enjoying the season is infectious. I love just people-watching and admiring all the unique artisan crafts. And yes, those ornaments at the stands are absolutely beautiful – it's tough not to want to take them all home! Staying warm is non-negotiable, as the OCR rightly pointed out: IT IS COLD! Bring hats/ gloves/ double socks, etc. Seriously, layer up more than you think you need to! I always recommend wool socks and my trusty water-resistant boots. There's nothing worse than cold feet cutting your fun short. And for parking, we usually opt for one of the underground parking garages underneath Millennium Park, which is super convenient for hitting both the market and the tree. But if you're looking for even more free things to do in Chicago in December, here are a couple of my other absolute favorites: First up, Lincoln Park Zoo Lights! This is an absolute must-do during the holiday season. The zoo transforms into a luminous wonderland with millions of twinkling lights, intricate displays, and even ice sculptures. It’s completely free to enter and walk around, which is fantastic. My tip? Go on a weekday evening if you can to avoid the biggest crowds, and definitely grab a hot chocolate or cider to sip while you stroll. It’s perfect for all ages and truly captures the holiday spirit without costing a dime. It's a bit of a walk or short bus ride from downtown, but totally worth it. Another simple, yet incredibly festive, free activity is just strolling down Michigan Avenue, also known as the Magnificent Mile. The shops pull out all the stops with their holiday window displays, and the entire street is decked out in stunning lights and decorations. It's like a free art exhibit and a beautiful way to soak in the city's holiday grandeur. I love doing this after dinner, when the lights really pop. You can walk from Millennium Park north, admiring the architecture and the festive atmosphere. Lastly, don't underestimate the joy of simply exploring different neighborhoods. Many Chicago neighborhoods put up their own unique light displays and decorations, offering a more local, charming holiday experience. Places like Andersonville, Lincoln Square, or even some residential streets near Lincoln Park can be absolutely magical to walk through. Just bundle up, grab a friend, and let the festive vibes wash over you. There's a real sense of community spirit, and you often stumble upon hidden gems or beautifully decorated homes. So, whether you're collecting every year's mug at Christkindlmarket or admiring the dazzling lights at Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago in December offers so many incredible free experiences. Don't let the cold deter you – with the right preparation and a spirit of adventure, you'll find plenty to love about these CHICAGO Winter Activities!
