... Read moreAs a nursing student, I found understanding the axial skeleton crucial for grasping human anatomy deeply and succeeding in exams like TEAS and HESI. The vertebral column, or backbone, forms the central support structure and protects the spinal cord, which is vital to study in nursing anatomy. The axial skeleton is composed of 26 bones categorized mainly into cervical, thoracic, lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, and coccyx. The first seven cervical vertebrae located in the neck are smaller and include unique bones like the Atlas and Axis, which allow head movement—a fact I visualized through diagrams and practical models in class, helping me retain the concept. The 12 thoracic vertebrae, larger and stronger than cervical bones, have ribs attached, playing a role in protecting vital organs like the heart and lungs. Understanding this was essential when learning about respiratory and circulatory systems, linking anatomy to patient care. Lumbar vertebrae support much body weight and are the largest and strongest. During my studies, focusing on these bones helped me appreciate their clinical relevance, such as in lower back pain assessment. The sacrum and coccyx form the base of the spine; the sacrum is larger in females, which I learned adds to understanding anatomical differences important in patient assessments. Studying with accurate images and mnemonic devices strengthened my recall on this topic. I recommend future nurses engage with real-life clinical scenarios and interactive tools to complement textbook knowledge—the axial skeleton is foundational not just academically but practically in nursing care.
