From my experience studying hematology and working alongside healthcare professionals, I found that understanding the distinct types of leukemia—ALL, AML, and CML—is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is notable for the rapid increase of immature lymphoblasts, usually originating from B-cells, which is most common in children. Common symptoms include anemia, frequent infections due to decreased immunity, and bleeding tendencies from low platelet counts. Recognizing the lab findings such as increased lymphoblasts and TdT positivity can guide timely intervention. In contrast, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) involves immature myeloid cells or myeloblasts disrupting normal blood cell formation. The presence of Auer rods in the cytoplasm and specific chromosomal translocations like t(15;17) in subtypes such as acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) are critical diagnostic markers. AML typically affects older adults and often requires intensive treatment protocols. Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is distinguished by the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome t(9;22), producing the BCR-ABL fusion gene. This genetic abnormality triggers uncontrolled growth of granulocytes, leading to leukocytosis. CML progresses through chronic, accelerated, and blast crisis phases, each necessitating different management strategies. From personal study and clinical observations, understanding these genetic markers and clinical features is vital for nurses and medical students, especially when monitoring patients' responses to treatments like chemotherapy or targeted therapies such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors in CML. The hallmark features such as anemia, organomegaly, lymphadenopathy, and immune suppression in leukemia patients often require multidisciplinary care approaches, including supportive therapies to manage complications like infections or bleeding. Learning about leukemia’s pathogenesis deepened my appreciation for hematologic malignancies and underscored the importance of early detection and tailored treatment. For anyone studying nursing or involved in patient care, integrating this knowledge with clinical practice enhances not only diagnostic accuracy but also patient support and education, ultimately improving outcomes.
