The spinal cord
The spinal cord is a long, cylindrical structure of nervous tissue that extends from the base of the brain through the vertebral canal. It is a major part of the central nervous system and functions as the main pathway for communication between the brain and the body. The spinal cord carries sensory information to the brain and motor commands from the brain to muscles and organs. It also controls many reflex actions, such as withdrawal from pain, without direct involvement of the brain.
