Skull & Rib Cage Made Easy for Students
The human skull and rib cage are essential structures that protect vital organs and support body function. The skull consists of 22 bones, including 8 cranial bones such as the frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones, which protect the brain, and 14 facial bones like the zygomatic, maxilla, and mandible that shape the face and aid in chewing. The mandible is the only movable bone. The rib cage includes 12 pairs of ribs, the sternum, and costal cartilage. True ribs (1–7) attach directly to the sternum, false ribs (8–10) attach indirectly, and floating ribs (11–12) do not attach anteriorly. Together, they protect organs, support breathing, and maintain upper body structure.
