Menstrual cycle

... Read moreUnderstanding the menstrual cycle can empower women to better manage their reproductive health and plan for pregnancy or contraception. From personal experience, tracking basal body temperature (BBT) during the cycle is an effective method to identify ovulation. Typically, I noticed a slight temperature rise of about 0.3 to 0.5°C right after ovulation, confirming the luteal phase had begun. Additionally, changes in cervical mucus consistency—becoming thin, stretchy, and watery during ovulation—serve as natural signs of the fertile window. Utilizing these physiological cues alongside calendar tracking strengthens natural family planning methods without relying solely on hormonal contraception. Hormonal fluctuations throughout the cycle are fascinating. For instance, estrogen dominates the follicular or proliferative phase, stimulating the growth of ovarian follicles and thickening the endometrium. This phase ends with the LH surge at mid-cycle that triggers ovulation, releasing a mature ovum. The corpus luteum forms subsequently, secreting progesterone to prepare the uterus for potential implantation. If fertilization does not occur, progesterone and estrogen levels drop, leading to menstruation as the functional layer of the endometrium breaks down and sheds. Recognizing these hormonal shifts can aid in understanding symptoms like mood changes, breast tenderness, or energy fluctuations that some women experience premenstrually. For those facing irregular cycles or fertility challenges, monitoring hormone patterns and cycle length is critical. Medical professionals often evaluate menstrual cycle phases and hormone levels to diagnose conditions like PCOS or luteal phase defects. In sum, embracing knowledge about the menstrual cycle phases—menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal—and associated hormonal events improves awareness of reproductive health and supports informed decisions on family planning or medical consultation.
