The corpus luteum forms subsequently, secreting progesterone to prepare the uterus for potential implantation. If fertilization does not occur, progesterone and estrogen levels drop, leading to menstruation as the functional layer of the endometrium breaks down and sheds. Recognizing these hormonal shifts can aid in understanding symptoms like mood changes, breast tenderness, or energy fluctuations that some women experience premenstrually.
