Hey Lemon8 fam! I'm so excited to share my latest kitchen adventure with you – making homemade turmeric soda! Seriously, once you try this, you'll never go back to store-bought. It’s incredibly refreshing, and knowing exactly what goes into it makes it even better. Plus, hello anti-inflammatory and gut-friendly goodness! If you've been curious about fermentation, this is a fantastic and rewarding project. It all starts with a 'bug' – either a ginger bug or, in my case, a turmeric bug! Think of it as your natural starter for fermentation, full of good bacteria that create that wonderful fizz. I've been cultivating my turmeric bug for a while now, feeding it a little sugar and fresh turmeric, and it's become this bubbly, magical elixir. The OCR even caught a glimpse of my 'Ginger bug Turmeric bug Out the fridge' moment – those are my precious starters, ready to work their magic! Making the soda itself is surprisingly simple. Here’s what you’ll need: 1 cup active turmeric bug liquid (bubbly and smelling slightly yeasty) 2-3 inches fresh turmeric root, grated or thinly sliced 1-2 inches fresh ginger root, grated (optional, for extra kick!) 1/2 cup organic cane sugar (adjust to taste) 4 cups filtered water Juice of 1 lemon or lime (for brightness and flavor) Clean flip-top bottles for bottling Here's my super easy method: Prepare the Turmeric Base: In a saucepan, combine the grated turmeric (and ginger, if using), sugar, and 2 cups of the filtered water. Bring it to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes to extract all those lovely flavors and colors. Then, remove from heat and let it cool completely. This is crucial – you don't want to kill your bug with hot liquid! Strain and Combine: Once the turmeric mixture is completely cool, strain out the solids using a fine-mesh sieve. Discard the solids. Now, combine this turmeric liquid with the remaining 2 cups of filtered water and the lemon/lime juice in a large pitcher or jar. Add the Turmeric Bug: Gently pour your active turmeric bug liquid into the turmeric base. Give it a good stir to combine everything evenly. Bottle it Up! Carefully pour your mixture into your clean flip-top bottles, leaving about 1-2 inches of headspace at the top of each bottle. This space is essential for the carbonation to build up safely. Ferment and Burp: This is where the magic happens! I usually let mine ferment on the counter for 1-3 days, depending on how warm my kitchen is. You'll notice it getting bubbly and sometimes even a little cloudy. A crucial step is to 'burp' your bottles daily – just open them briefly to release excess pressure. Trust me, you don't want a soda explosion! I keep an eye on them daily, and sometimes I even pop them 'Out the fridge' for a quick peek before they're fully carbonated, just to check the fizz level. Chill and Enjoy: Once your soda reaches your desired level of fizziness, transfer the bottles to the fridge to slow down the fermentation process. It'll keep for a couple of weeks, but honestly, mine never lasts that long because it's so delicious! The flavor is so vibrant – earthy turmeric with a zesty kick, and that natural fizz is just delightful. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the wellness benefits of turmeric in a delicious, hydrating drink. Plus, making it yourself is incredibly satisfying. Give it a try, and let me know how your homemade turmeric soda turns out in the comments below!
