I first got into making these because I was looking for natural ways to support my gut health and reduce my reliance on store-bought, sugar-laden drinks. Starting your own turmeric or ginger bug is surprisingly simple and incredibly rewarding. All you really need is some fresh ginger or turmeric, sugar, and filtered water. I remember my first attempt; I was so nervous it wouldn't work, but once I saw those tiny bubbles forming, I was hooked! The process involves grating your chosen root, mixing it with sugar and water, and then letting the wild yeasts in the air and on the plant do their magic. Now, about the 'straining and feeding' part you saw in my post. This is crucial for keeping your bug alive and active. Think of it like feeding a pet! When I say 'feed,' I'm adding more sugar and sometimes a bit more grated ginger or turmeric to give the microbes more fuel. A good rule of thumb I've learned is that about 2 tablespoons of sugar is roughly 1/4 cup, which is often a good amount for feeding, depending on the size of your bug. This keeps the fermentation going strong, ensuring your bug stays vibrant and produces plenty of beneficial bacteria. Straining, on the other hand, is about removing the old, spent ginger or turmeric pieces. I usually do this before feeding, every few days or once a week, depending on how active my bug is and how much natural soda I'm making.
