Color Grading w/ VSCO: Steal my Recipe 🌈

2025/2/11 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! If you're anything like me, you love scrolling through beautiful feeds and wondering how people get their photos looking so professional and cohesive. A huge part of that magic? Color grading! And trust me, you don't need fancy software to achieve it. I've been experimenting with VSCO, and I've found it's an absolute game-changer for elevating my pictures. Why VSCO, you ask? From my experience, VSCO strikes the perfect balance between powerful editing tools and a super intuitive interface. It’s not just about slapping on a filter; it's about making specific adjustments that truly enhance your photo's mood and aesthetic. When I first started, I was overwhelmed by all the options, but once I got the hang of it, I realized its strengths lie in its accessible presets and granular controls. Many people search for reviews and evaluations of VSCO's color grading capabilities, and I can confidently say it delivers, especially for mobile editing. Let’s talk a bit about how to navigate the VSCO app. When you open it, you'll see your studio with all your imported photos. To edit, just tap on a photo and then the editing icon (usually a slider symbol). This is where the magic happens! You'll find a row of tools at the bottom, from presets to manual adjustments like exposure, contrast, and of course, color tools. Getting familiar with this interface is key to mastering your edits. My secret recipe, which you saw details for in the original post, involves a few specific adjustments that I've found work wonders. For instance, the FP4 Fuji Pro 400H is a fantastic preset to start with. It gives a beautiful, slightly desaturated, and film-like base that I absolutely adore. After applying that, I usually tweak the Saturation to bring back a bit of vibrancy without making the image look artificial. A slight boost in Sharpen can really make details pop, especially in portraits or landscape shots. And let's not forget about Grain! The OCR recognition for my image specifically highlighted Grain +4.6, and for good reason. Adding a touch of grain gives photos a lovely, organic, and timeless feel, mimicking analog film. It's subtle but makes a huge difference in adding character. Beyond these, VSCO offers advanced tools like the HSL tool for fine-tuning specific color hues, saturation, and luminance, allowing you to isolate and adjust reds, blues, or greens without affecting the entire image. The Tone tool is also incredibly useful for adjusting highlights and shadows independently, giving your photos more depth. And if you ever feel your image is too bright or too dark, the Darken image (or exposure) adjustment is your best friend. While my recipe is a great starting point, remember that every photo is different. Think of it as a foundation! You might need to Adjust things slightly based on the lighting or colors in your original shot. Don't be afraid to experiment with the sliders. Sometimes, pulling back on a setting like saturation or contrast can have a more impactful result than pushing it too far. The beauty of VSCO is its flexibility. So, next time you're editing, try my recipe, but then play around with the other tools to truly make your photos shine. Happy editing!

youve been colorgrading your photos/shot wrong
this is a very common mistake that i see many creators or beginner photographers/videographers do, i even made the same mistakes at one point. many people will utilize the basic sliders to colorgrade their photos, but this will lead to a lot of imbalance since you can only control two variables rat

This couple was so easy to photograph, and because it was a micro wedding, we had a lot more time to do some creative shots. The room was really orange looking in real life and on camera, so the edit focused on keeping the warmth without the photo looking crazy tinted. Every camera is different
