Embarrassing but…how do you do laundry?

Something hard for me to admit but I am in college and still have no idea how to properly do laundry. My mom still does it for me every weekend and I always try to learn but it never sticks. All I know is that you are supposed to separate darks from lights and to never put something red with something white. Beyond that, I have no idea what I am doing.
