I work and childcare and always get sick.

I have been working at a day care for a bit over a year now and I have noticed that within in that year the amount of times I get sick has practically doubled. Is there anything I could do to boost my immune system or just not get as sick anymore? Would love any advice you guys have down below in the comments! Don’t forget to like and follow.

... Read moreI totally get it! Working in childcare, surrounded by little sniffles and sneezes, it feels like you're constantly battling something new. I've definitely been there, asking myself, 'I work and childcare and always get sick. What do I do?' It’s not just exhausting; it impacts your energy, your mood, and even your ability to enjoy your time off. But don't worry, there are practical steps you can take to strengthen your defenses and reduce those sick days. First off, let's talk about boosting your immune system from the inside out. Your body needs the right fuel to fight off germs. I've found that prioritizing nutrient-dense foods makes a huge difference. Think lots of colorful fruits and vegetables – bell peppers, citrus fruits, and leafy greens are packed with Vitamin C. Zinc-rich foods like nuts, seeds, and legumes also play a vital role in immune function. And don't underestimate the power of a healthy gut! Incorporating probiotics through yogurt, kimchi, or supplements can really help support your immune system. Next up, sleep is non-negotiable. When you're constantly on the go, especially in a demanding job like childcare, sleep can often get pushed aside. But consistent, quality sleep (aiming for 7-9 hours) is when your body repairs and regenerates. I noticed a significant improvement in my resilience to illness when I made sleep a priority, even if it meant adjusting my evening routine. Stress management is another key factor. The childcare environment can be incredibly rewarding but also incredibly stressful. Chronic stress can suppress your immune system, making you more vulnerable. Even short mindfulness exercises, deep breathing, or a few minutes of quiet time each day can help keep stress levels in check. Now, for those essential hygiene practices – your first line of defense! You're likely already a hand-washing pro, but thoroughness is key. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after diaper changes, assisting with nose wipes, and before eating. Hand sanitizer is a great backup, but nothing beats a good scrub with soap and water. A habit I worked hard to break was touching my face – eyes, nose, and mouth are easy entry points for germs. It’s harder than it sounds, but being mindful of it can significantly reduce exposure. Also, don't forget to regularly sanitize your personal items like your phone, keys, and water bottle. Finally, workplace strategies can make a big difference. Don't be afraid to politely, but firmly, remind parents about sick child policies. It's for the health of everyone, including yourself and the other children. When dealing with bodily fluids, utilize gloves – better safe than sorry! If possible, try to ensure good ventilation in your workspace by opening windows when the weather permits. And remember to listen to your body. Sometimes, despite all our best efforts, a bug will get through. When you feel that first tickle or ache, don't push it. Rest, hydrate, and consider taking a sick day if needed. Your body needs that time to recover properly. By taking these proactive steps, you can significantly reduce how often you get sick and feel more energetic and healthy in your rewarding role in childcare.

I've learned that a lot of children don't wash their hands and touch everything. So mang surfaces do not get cleaned as well! I definitely suggest washing your hands regularly and trying to avoid touching surfaces. I also suggest covering your coughs/ sneezes and reminding children to do so. Disinfect any surfaces as well!
