๐Ÿ˜ฅ Iโ€™m Worried About Student Teachingโ€ฆ

I met with my classroom teacher & university mentor today, and it was nice to get to know them a bit better and to see what the school and classroom looked like. But after I left the meeting, I just had a pit in my stomach. I know I should think positively, but Iโ€™m really wondering how Iโ€™m going to get through this semester in one piece.

Part of that comes from my academic needs relating to my ADHD and Autism. I finally got approved for accommodations last year, and they had been helpful. I reached out a while ago to talk to my departmentโ€™s teacher licensure coordinator about how my accommodations would look while student teaching, but we never got around to meeting about that. I donโ€™t know what that means in terms of using my accommodations while working as a student teacher, and Iโ€™m worried about that.

I really struggle with lesson planning too. Iโ€™m required to use templates where things are planned down to the minute, but the reality is that itโ€™s extremely rare for a class to go exactly the way you planned it. Because of my delayed graduation, I also havenโ€™t been in any art education classes since 2022, so I feel super rusty on those skills to begin with.

I also donโ€™t know any of the other students in my major that are doing their student teaching this semester. All of my classmates that I had taken art ed classes with previously have either graduated already or decided to pursue other things. Iโ€™m worried about not being able to connect with the other students in my seminar class because they mostly already know each other, and Iโ€™ve struggled really badly with making friends in college anyway.

Student teaching is like paying to have a full time job, instead of getting paid. My school strongly discourages student teachers from having part time jobs on the side but I donโ€™t know how I can support myself without that. Iโ€™m planning to work just weekend mornings because I need to earn money, but that means Iโ€™ll never have a full day of rest unless school is out.

I feel so anxious and overwhelmed. I feel unprepared and I donโ€™t know what I donโ€™t know! If anyone has advice or thoughts to share Iโ€™d really appreciate it.

... Read moreStudent teaching can be an overwhelming experience, especially for those dealing with ADHD and Autism. It's crucial to establish effective communication with your university mentor and classroom teacher to ensure your accommodations are tailored to your needs. Create a flexible lesson plan that allows for spontaneity, as real classrooms rarely go as planned. Connecting with fellow student teachers for emotional support can alleviate feelings of isolationโ€”consider using social media or school forums for this purpose. Fostering friendships can be challenging, especially when you feel like an outsider, but joining study groups or online communities can open up new avenues for connection. Additionally, understanding the financial implications of student teaching is key. Many student teachers face similar financial constraints, so exploring part-time job opportunities that align with your schedule is essential. Always rememberโ€”itโ€™s okay to seek help and share your concerns, as others in your position may provide valuable insights. Finally, practicing self-care is essential during this intense period. Regular breaks, mindfulness practices, and communicating your feelings with trusted friends or family can make a substantial difference in your overall well-being. Remember that youโ€™re not alone in this journey, and your feelings are valid.

I started as an education major but didnโ€™t go for the masters because I was so worry education wasnโ€™t for me. I tried elementary and hear some horro stories about middle school. I was so confused. At the end, I tried High school and felt in love with my profession. I canโ€™t say we have (had) the same situation but donโ€™t give up. Give your best and if you donโ€™t like it, find a different path with your Ed degree. I graduated as an Education major and ended up working with ELD high school students and I love it. My best wishes to you, you will find you path ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Not in the same major, but it took me almost 6 years to get my bachelorโ€™s degree cause of covid and bad capstone experiences so I kinda feel you - hang in there! Itโ€™s such a relief to not have to worry about graduating!โค๏ธ
