... Read moreSo, like many of you, I've had those days where I spend ages on my makeup, trying to go for a true 'glam' look, only to step back and feel like it still looks... well, natural. It's like I have this internal filter that makes everything seem less intense than I intended! This feeling, where you can't quite judge the true impact or amount of makeup you've applied, is what many of us call 'makeup blindness.' It's a real thing, and it often leaves you wondering if you're doing something wrong or if your eyes are just playing tricks on you. I've definitely felt this, especially when I try to add more blush or go for a bolder eye, and in my head, it feels like a lot, but then I see a photo and it's barely there!
Why does this happen? I've been doing some digging and chatting with friends, and there are a few common culprits. Firstly, lighting plays a huge role. Applying makeup in dim or yellow-toned light can make you over-apply because you're compensating for the poor visibility. Then you step into natural light, and suddenly, boom – it's a lot! Another factor could be how accustomed your eyes are to your own face. We see ourselves every day, so subtle changes might not register as much to us as they would to someone else. Also, sometimes our application technique might be naturally geared towards a softer finish, even when we try to go heavy. For example, I love a good glossy lip, but maybe I need to try a matte finish to really make a statement. Or perhaps my defined eyebrows just naturally frame my face in a way that blends with other makeup, making even a red lipstick look less dramatic than it would on someone else.
If you, like me, are struggling with makeup blindness, don't worry, there are ways to get a clearer picture!
Take Photos: This is a game-changer! Snap a few selfies in different lighting conditions (natural light, indoor light) after you've done your makeup. The camera often shows you exactly what others see. You might be surprised at how much (or how little) product actually shows up.
Ask a Trusted Friend: Sometimes an outside perspective is all you need. Ask a friend whose opinion you trust if they think your makeup looks 'natural' or 'heavy.'
Check in Different Mirrors/Lighting: Don't just rely on your bathroom mirror. Step outside or move to a room with different lighting before you head out.
Experiment with Application Tools: Maybe switching from a brush to a sponge, or vice versa, for foundation or blush can make a difference in intensity.
Focus on One Feature: If you want a 'heavy' look, try focusing heavily on one feature – say, a dramatic eye or a bold lip – rather than trying to amp up everything at once. This can prevent that 'overdone but still natural' paradox.
Try Bolder Shades: If your natural-looking makeup is your default, try stepping out of your comfort zone with a brighter blush, a deeper eyeshadow, or that vibrant red lipstick you've been eyeing. Sometimes we just need to push our boundaries to truly see the impact.
It's all about learning how our personal style translates visually. I'm always looking for new tricks, so if you've got any recommendations for seeing past your own makeup blindness, please share them below! Let's help each other achieve the looks we truly want!
