I bought this book because the cover reminded me of Baby Teeth and assumed it was a thriller. It was not. 😂📚

If He Had Been With Me by Laura Nowlin is a young adult romance following Autumn and Finn who have loved each other their whole lives but spend the entire book watching each other date other people instead of just saying it out loud. The repetitive back and forth was a lot and the book was longer than the story needed to be.

The ending felt like it existed purely to set up a second book rather than give this one a satisfying close.

2.5 out of 5 stars. A nice change of pace from my thrillers but not my kind of read. Always check the genre before you buy. Lesson learned. 😂

... Read moreWhen I picked up If He Had Been With Me by Laura Nowlin, I was drawn in by the cover and expected a thriller similar to Baby Teeth. Instead, I found a deeply emotional young adult romance that explores the complexity of unspoken love between Autumn and Finn. Their story revolves around the bittersweet tension of loving someone silently while watching them date others—a theme that resonated with me personally. One of the hardest things about this book was its repetitive back-and-forth structure, which some might find tedious. However, for young readers or those new to the genre, this detailed exploration of emotions and relationships can create a slow but intimate narrative. The way the author depicts adolescent feelings—awkward, intense, and sometimes painfully unexpressed—is authentic and relatable. Although the ending felt mainly designed to set up a sequel, it left me reflecting on how often in life people hesitate to say what they truly feel, potentially missing important moments. That ambiguity added a layer of realism I appreciated. On a personal note, this book inspired me to diversify my reading habits beyond my usual psychological thrillers. Reading outside my comfort zone introduced me to fresh storytelling perspectives and emotional experiences. For teens or anyone who enjoys heartfelt romance with genuine characters, If He Had Been With Me offers valuable insight into young love and the struggles of communication. It’s a reminder that sometimes, life’s most significant moments happen in the spaces between words. I’d recommend giving this book a thoughtful read and then deciding if its sequel is worth diving into for closure or expansion of Autumn and Finn's story. If you have read this book or the sequel, I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether the follow-up improved your view of the story. Sharing these kinds of unfiltered book reviews helps readers find reads that truly resonate, and it encourages us all to explore new literary landscapes.
