I picked this up at TJ Maxx for the cover and had absolutely no idea what I was walking into. 📦📚

Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid is not a thriller. It is historical fiction following women at NASA in the 1980s. The book opens with a tragedy and works backward to tell the full story of every crew member involved.

The character development is exceptional. The secret relationship between two female crew members written during a time they could not be open without losing their careers is one of the most beautifully written storylines I have read this year.

This ending had a lot of BookTok readers in tears. I personally would have been okay stopping a few pages earlier but the intensity leading up to it is everything.

4.5 out of 5 stars. Worth every page.

... Read moreWhen I first picked up Atmosphere, I expected a typical historical novel but was deeply surprised by how it blended emotional depth with historical facts about women at NASA during the 1980s. The backdrop of NASA's space missions adds a unique layer to the story, highlighting the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated field. What struck me most was how the novel sensitively portrayed the secret relationship between two female crew members, a reflection of the real struggles LGBTQ+ individuals faced during that era, where being open could mean losing not only their careers but their sense of identity. The narrative structure that starts with a tragedy and moves backward really helped me connect with each character’s motivations and fears, creating a more immersive experience. This approach made the characters feel authentic and their relationships believable. The tension building toward the ending is intense, and although some readers felt it could have ended earlier, I found the conclusion well worth the emotional journey. If you’re intrigued by stories about perseverance, diversity, and untold histories, Atmosphere offers a fresh perspective on NASA’s history and women's contributions to science and aerospace. Plus, it reminds us how far we've come and how personal sacrifices shape progress. I've recommended this book to several friends who love historical fiction with strong character arcs and emotional storytelling. On a side note, the mention of BOOKTOK in the OCR content reflects how widely this book has resonated with the reading community, sparking emotional reactions and thoughtful discussions across social media about representation and love in challenging times.
