error coins

2025/9/26 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow coin hunters! You know how thrilling it is to find those little imperfections that make a coin truly special. While my original post highlighted some amazing obverse die cracks and that cool BIE error on Liberty, I wanted to dive deeper into something many of us are constantly searching for: errors on the Lincoln Cent Union Shield Reverse design. This reverse design, introduced in 2010, symbolizes Lincoln's preservation of the United States. It features the Union Shield with 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' across a scroll, framed by 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and 'ONE CENT'. It's a beautiful design, but also a hotspot for unique varieties if you know where to look! I remember spending hours sifting through rolls of pennies, specifically looking at the reverse. One of the most common, yet still exciting, finds are subtle die cracks that can appear on the shield itself, or extend from the lettering like 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' or 'ONE CENT'. These are often overlooked because they can be very fine, almost like hairline scratches, but with a good magnifying glass, they pop right out. I once found a 2012 cent with a tiny crack running through the 'U' in 'UNUM' – it wasn't a major error, but it was my find, and that's what makes collecting so much fun! Another area to scrutinize is around the scroll containing 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. Sometimes you'll find minor notching or doubling, which could indicate a subtle doubled die reverse (DDR). While not as famous as some obverse DDRs, these can still add value and excitement to your collection. It’s all about attention to detail. The letters in 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and 'ONE CENT' also frequently show signs of die chips or minor cracks, especially near the edges. Don't forget to check the areas around the design elements for die chips or extra metal – sometimes tiny pieces of the die break off, creating raised blobs on the coin. These can be particularly interesting when they appear within the shield's vertical stripes or near the bottom 'ONE CENT' inscription. For those serious about finding these hidden gems, my advice is always to have good lighting and at least a 10x loupe. The OCR mentions seeing the Union Shield design clearly, and that's exactly what you need to do to spot these minor anomalies. I've heard stories of collectors finding significant errors on the Union Shield reverse that were initially dismissed as post-mint damage. You never know what a careful eye might reveal! Happy hunting, and may your next roll of Lincoln Cents reveal a treasure on its Union Shield reverse!
