... Read moreCacti are amazing, aren't they? I've always loved their unique shapes and resilience. But when I first started my cactus collection, I quickly realized there was a lot more to their care than just sunshine and occasional water. One of the biggest game-changers for me was understanding cactus dormancy. It's truly a secret weapon for keeping them vibrant and healthy year after year! What Exactly Is Dormancy? My Personal Aha! Moment I used to think my cacti just stopped growing in winter because it was cold. But dormancy is so much more than that! It's a natural resting period where their growth slows down dramatically to conserve energy. Think of it like a long nap, helping them survive harsh conditions like cold or drought. Knowing this definition helped me understand why I needed to change my care routine. I started seeing it as a crucial part of their life cycle, not just a period of inactivity. This is especially important for desert cacti, which are adapted to extreme conditions. The Golden Rule: Cactus Watering Minimal Is Key! This was probably the hardest lesson for me to learn! When my cacti are in their active growing phase, I'm pretty generous with water. But during dormancy, it’s a completely different story. I've learned that minimal watering is absolutely crucial. For most of my desert cacti, I practically stop watering them entirely in late fall and through winter. If I absolutely have to, I might offer a tiny sip once a month, strictly making sure the soil is bone dry. The image of the little cactus saying "I'm Cold!" really resonated with me – they don't need a lot of water when they're not actively growing and are in cooler temperatures. Overwatering during this time is a death sentence, as it leads to rot. Always check the soil deeply before even thinking about watering! Keeping Them Comfy: Temperature Requirements & Knowing Your Climate I quickly realized that just like us, cacti have preferred temperatures. For many, a cool environment is essential for proper dormancy and even encourages blooming later! I aim to keep mine somewhere between 41°F and 50°F (5°C to 10°C) during their rest period. This might mean moving them to a cooler room, an unheated sunroom, or even bringing them indoors if you live somewhere with frosty winters. You absolutely need to know your local climate and what your specific cactus species prefers. I once left a sensitive variety out too long, and learned my lesson the hard way! Researching each cactus you bring home truly is the best advice from a cactus enthusiast like me. Light During Downtime: Not Quite Lights Out While they don't need intense, direct light during dormancy, a little indirect light can still be beneficial, especially for young cactus seedlings. I keep mine near a window where they get some ambient light, but I avoid strong, direct sun that might encourage them to wake up too soon or get scorched. It's all about providing a gentle, consistent environment. Species-Specific Needs: One Size Does Not Fit All This is where research becomes your best friend. Not all cacti have the same dormancy requirements! For example, epiphytic cacti (like Christmas or Easter cacti) often have different needs than desert varieties. I made the mistake of treating all my cacti the same when I started, and some weren't thriving. Now, I always look up the specific needs of each plant. What works for a saguaro won't necessarily work for a Rhipsalis! The Gentle Wake-Up Call: Gradual Transition When spring rolls around and temperatures start to rise, it's tempting to immediately move them into bright sun and drench them with water. But I've learned that a gradual transition is key to prevent stress. Slowly reintroduce them to more light and warmth, and gradually increase your watering. This helps them ease out of their rest period naturally and get ready for another season of growth. Following these guidelines has made such a difference in the health and vitality of my cactus collection!
