Alaska Trip - Day 3

We woke up in this beautiful cabin at Coopers Landing with the Kenai river flowing by. After a slow morning of sipping coffee in a swing on the riverbank, we packed our car and headed to Kenai Fjords National Park. The main attraction there is Ext Glacier but there is so much more to see! Lots of beautiful views and bald eagles were spotted! You can hike up to get close to the glacier which we did. It was extremely busy the day we were there. It’s an intermediate hike with quite a bit of uphill hiking on the way in but we enjoyed it even with the kids in the group. There’s no phone service at all. From there we went to the town of Seward. I really loved this little fishing village. We ate lunch at a hole in the wall place, Alaska Seafood Grill, and it was very good! We ended up in Soldotna for the night.

... Read moreOne of the most exciting parts of our Alaska adventure was arriving at Kenai Fjords National Park. As we pulled up, the sight of the official Kenai Fjords National Park sign was a definite photo opportunity, signaling the start of something truly special for our Alaska family vacation. For anyone planning their own trip, I highly recommend stopping at the visitor center right after the Kenai Fjords National Park entrance. It’s super helpful for grabbing maps, checking trail conditions, and getting insider tips from the rangers, especially if you're traveling with little ones like we were. Navigating an intermediate hike like the one to Exit Glacier with kids in tow required a bit of planning, but it was so worth it! We packed plenty of snacks, water, and made sure everyone had comfortable shoes. The uphill sections were a good workout, but the promise of seeing the majestic glacier up close kept everyone motivated. It’s a fantastic way to immerse the whole family in Alaska’s incredible natural beauty. We also learned that flexibility is key when you're exploring with children; sometimes, a quick break for birdwatching (we saw so many bald eagles!) or admiring the vibrant purple wildflowers and red and yellow wildflowers along the path is more important than rushing to the destination. Our morning at Coopers Landing, waking up to the Kenai River flowing by, was pure bliss. Sipping coffee in a swing on the riverbank, surrounded by the lush green forest with mountains in the background, felt like a scene from a postcard. This area, including the nearby Russian River, is a gem that truly embodies the spirit of an Alaska family vacation. While our trip was in summer, the natural beauty here is captivating year-round. Even if you're not into fishing, the Russian River offers serene spots for short walks, wildlife viewing, and just soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It’s a wonderful contrast to the more bustling parts of the park and provides a chance for quiet reflection and family bonding amidst breathtaking scenery. Places like this, where you can simply enjoy nature’s grandeur, make an Alaska trip unforgettable for all ages.
