It was a slow reading month for me again due to my busy work schedule, but hopefully that changes for June!
I recently picked up You Like It Darker, Stephen King’s newest book, which is a collection of short stories. One of the short stories is a sequel to Cujo, so obviously I had to read Cujo before reading that book. I didn’t expect too much from the book, and I had never seen the movie. I accidentally spoiled the ending for myself and I’m glad I did because I probably would’ve cried a lot more than I did.
Next I read Carving for Cara. It’s a Halloween dark romance novella that was very alright. I didn’t like how it ended on a cliff hanger with no second book. It was a short quick read that did help me with trying to get back on track with my reading goal for the year.
Next we have Little Stranger by Leigh Rivers. Y’all, when I say I’ve never wanted a mute psychopath foster brother until now 🥵❤️ Malachi is one of my new dark romance MMCs. I’m so excited to read the sequel Little Liar that will be coming out in August!!
Someone please give me more dark romance book recommendations 🖤
... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, let's dive deeper into some of the themes from my May reading wrap-up, especially for those of you who, like me, are drawn to the darker side of romance! I've noticed a lot of buzz around characters described as 'ruthless kings' or powerful, morally gray leads, and honestly, who can blame us? There's something undeniably captivating about a character who commands attention and perhaps a little fear.
My recent read, 'Little Stranger' by Leigh Rivers, perfectly exemplifies this appeal with Malachi. He's described as a mute psychopath foster brother, and yes, that sounds intense—because it is! But that's precisely what makes him such a compelling dark romance MMC. Readers often look for characters who aren't your typical Prince Charming; they want depth, danger, and a certain level of intensity that keeps you on the edge of your seat. A 'ruthless king' isn't just about power, it's about a character who operates by his own rules, often with a protective and possessive streak that, despite his flaws, makes him incredibly alluring. Think about the intricate power dynamics and the push-and-pull in relationships with such characters – it's pure literary adrenaline!
If you're searching for more books that deliver on that 'ruthless king' vibe, here's what I've learned to look for. First, pay attention to tropes like 'enemies-to-lovers,' 'mafia romance,' or 'anti-hero' narratives. These often feature male leads who are powerful, dangerous, and sometimes, yes, a little ruthless, but whose actions are often driven by a twisted sense of loyalty or a dark past. Books that explore morally ambiguous characters who challenge your perceptions of good and evil are usually a good bet. They're not always easy reads, but they're incredibly rewarding for those who appreciate complex storytelling and intense emotional journeys. 'Carving for Cara,' for instance, as a Halloween dark romance novella, also dipped its toes into those darker, more unconventional romantic territories, even with its cliffhanger ending.
Another aspect of these ruthless characters is their unwavering determination and often an unexpected vulnerability hidden beneath layers of hardened exterior. Discovering those cracks in their armor, and watching them fall for their love interest against all odds, is a huge part of the appeal. It's not about condoning harmful behavior, but about exploring the complexities of human nature within a fictional, high-stakes setting. Think about the intense world-building that often accompanies these stories, creating an immersive experience where every decision feels monumental.
So, if you're like me and craving more dark romance with characters who fit that 'ruthless' and powerful mold, keep an eye out for authors known for pushing boundaries and delving into the shadows. Look for reviews that mention terms like 'alpha heroes,' 'brooding leads,' or 'morally gray characters.' You might just find your next book obsession, perhaps even a new 'Little Stranger' to captivate your imagination!
