Trying new gel pen sizes 🖊️
I have been a 0.38mm pen truther since I first got into stationery, but today I put a 1.0mm refill into my Pilot G-2 and it may very well have changed my life.
I like writing out the lyrics to my favorite songs to test out my pens and thought I’d share with you Lemon8 folks. (Bonus points if you can find my mistakes 👀)

After sharing my personal gel pen size revelation, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what really goes into choosing the perfect gel pen, especially beyond just the tip size! Believe me, as someone who spends hours filling a lined notebook with handwritten song lyrics, I've learned a thing or two. When you're picking a gel pen, especially if you're a student or someone who writes a lot, consider these factors: Paper Quality: A finer tip like 0.38mm or 0.5mm is fantastic for thin paper or if you write in a small journal, as it prevents bleed-through and smudging. Thicker tips, like my newfound 1.0mm love, can feel luxurious on heavier paper but might feather on lower-quality sheets. Your Handwriting Style: Do you have tiny, neat script or a bolder, more expressive hand? Finer points are great for intricate details and small notes, while broader tips can make your handwriting, especially cursive writing with a gel pen, look more dramatic and legible from a distance. Purpose of Writing: Are you taking quick notes in lectures (where a 0.7mm might be a good all-rounder for speed and clarity)? Or are you journaling where you want a smooth, consistent flow and a specific aesthetic? For drawing or adding emphasis, a 1.0mm or even larger might be perfect. Ink Flow and Longevity: While my article focused on the immediate writing experience, many wonder, 'how many pages can a gel pen write?' This really depends on the pen's ink reservoir size and tip thickness. Generally, finer tips use less ink and last longer. However, some larger tips, particularly those with high-quality gel ink, can surprisingly last a long time while providing an incredibly smooth experience. It's a balance! Comfort and Grip: This is often overlooked, but if you're writing for hours, the pen's barrel and grip are just as important as the tip. A comfortable grip will prevent hand fatigue, making even the longest study sessions more bearable. My journey from a strict 0.38mm fan to embracing the 1.0mm has shown me that experimenting is key. Don't be afraid to try different point sizes and brands, whether it's a Pilot G-2, a Uni-ball, or another brand. Every pen has its own personality, and finding the right match can truly elevate your daily writing, making even mundane tasks feel a little bit more special. Happy writing!
