If you're ever near Nonthaburi, Thailand, and looking for a unique cultural experience away from the bustling city, this island is an absolute gem. I took a short boat ride, and immediately, the tranquil atmosphere and the sight of traditional stilt houses by the river made me feel like I’d stepped into another world. My adventure started by following a charming blue directional signpost that pointed towards temples and outlined the 5.20 km route around the island. It’s perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride, allowing you to soak in all the local charm. The main highlight for me was undoubtedly the famous Koh Kret pottery village. It's truly a sight to behold, watching the artisans expertly craft beautiful terracotta pottery. You can find unique handmade bowls, pots, and figurines, making for perfect souvenirs. It's no wonder this village is celebrated as an 'OTOP VILLAGE CHAMPION'; the craftsmanship is exceptional. Weekends on Koh Kret are extra special because of the vibrant weekend market. The market stalls lining the narrow pathways offer an incredible array of local goods, from fresh produce to intricate crafts. I spent ages browsing, finding little treasures to take home. And the food! You absolutely cannot visit Koh Kret without indulging in the local delicacies. I was mesmerized by the display of colorful and intricately shaped traditional Thai sweets, especially the beautiful flower-shaped desserts. They're not just pretty; they're incredibly delicious and make for a fantastic treat after exploring. Beyond the crafts and food, the island also boasts some beautiful cultural sites. I was particularly struck by Wat Paramaiyikawat, with its iconic white leaning pagoda and detailed traditional Thai roof architecture. It’s a peaceful spot to reflect and admire the local religious artistry. The entire island gives off such a relaxed, authentic vibe, with the river meandering softly and locals going about their day. It’s a place where you can truly slow down, appreciate the manual labor of the artisans, and taste the genuine flavors of Thailand. My advice for anyone planning a trip to Koh Kret is to go on a weekend to fully experience the market, bring comfortable shoes for exploring, and definitely come hungry for all the amazing snacks and sweets. It's an easy day trip from Bangkok or Nonthaburi and offers a wonderful glimpse into a different side of Thai culture. I can't wait to go back and rediscover its charm!
