Healing from emotional wounds is a deeply personal journey, and sometimes the conventional wisdom around forgiveness doesn’t resonate with everyone. From my own experience, I’ve learned that while time can soothe many pains, forgiveness isn’t always the key to peace—and that’s okay. There’s a common belief that forgiveness is essential because it frees us from anger and hurt. It takes courage to embrace this mindset, especially when society implies that not forgiving means carrying grudges. Yet, choosing not to forgive doesn’t mean you are bitter or hateful; it means you are honoring your own emotional needs and self-respect. Healing can come through self-love, accepting your feelings as valid, and prioritizing your mental and emotional safety. When I decided to stop forcing forgiveness on myself, I noticed a profound shift in how I valued my peace over external expectations. This approach doesn't close the door to healing but rather redefines it on your terms. You might heal by learning to let go in different ways—through creative expression, therapy, meditation, or supportive relationships—that don't require you to justify or excuse the past. Ultimately, everyone's healing process is unique. If forgiveness brings you relief, that's wonderful; if it doesn't, remember you still have the right to heal and flourish by choosing you first. Protecting your peace is one of the most powerful acts of self-love we can give ourselves.
