... Read moreFrom my own experience attending numerous dim sum brunches, I’ve found that pacing myself really makes a difference. I usually start with a hot cup of Pu-erh tea, which not only feels soothing but also appears to aid in digestion. Instead of diving straight into fried options or carb-heavy items like rice rolls and buns, I prioritize steamed dumplings such as har gow and siew mai. These are lighter and less greasy, so my energy feels stable. Another game changer has been paying close attention to sauces. I used to douse my dishes with hoisin sauce and chili oil, but I noticed these made me feel sluggish later. Switching to light soy sauce or vinegar with ginger helps flavor the food without overwhelming my digestion. I also try to slow down my eating pace by using chopsticks and pausing between dishes. This helps me recognize when I’m about 70-80% full—enough to feel satisfied but not stuffed. Overeating is definitely the culprit behind that heavy, sleepy feeling. Finally, for dessert, I steer clear of typical sweet endings like egg tarts or mango pudding. Instead, fresh fruit paired with more tea rounds off the meal without a sugar crash. Balancing protein-rich dim sum options like chicken feet or lean meats with greens adds fiber and keeps my energy from dipping. These strategies have helped me enjoy dim sum gatherings more comfortably, avoiding that dreaded post-meal food coma and leaving me feeling energized and ready to continue my day or evening.
