High glycemic foods like sugary drinks and pastries cause blood glucose to surge rapidly, prompting the release of insulin. This insulin increases androgens and IGF-1, hormones that boost oil production and speed up skin cell turnover — leading to clogged pores and more acne. Over time, consistently high blood sugar levels promote inflammation throughout the body. This inflammation not only worsens redness and swelling in pimples but also slows down the healing process. For me, this meant that usual breakouts lasted longer and were more painful. An additional hidden effect is glycation, where excess glucose binds to collagen and elastin in the skin. This accelerates skin aging by reducing elasticity and impairing repair. It also causes acne scars to linger, worsening skin texture. To improve my skin, I started monitoring my blood sugar by reducing intake of high glycemic foods, choosing complex carbs and fresh vegetables instead. I also made sure to stay hydrated, get enough sleep, and manage stress to keep hormones balanced. The result was visibly calmer skin and fewer breakouts. If you struggle with acne, especially if it seems resistant to topical treatments, consider how your diet and blood sugar levels might be contributing. Stable blood sugar promotes calmer hormones, less inflammation, and better skin recovery — all key to clear, healthy skin.
