While my itinerary covered the highlights, there's so much more to know to make your trip unforgettable, especially if you're hitting Alaska in the summer. Why Summer is the BEST Time for Alaska: For those wondering about places to visit in Alaska in summer, let me tell you, summer (June-August) is truly magical. The long daylight hours mean more time for exploration, and the weather is generally milder, although still unpredictable. This is peak season for wildlife viewing – think bears, eagles, and of course, whales! The landscapes are vibrant green, and all the seasonal tours and activities are in full swing. It's when Alaska truly comes alive! Diving Deeper into My Favorite Spots: Skagway: My ZIPLINING IN SKAGWAY experience was absolutely exhilarating – soaring over the rainforest canopy felt incredible! But Skagway isn't just for thrill-seekers. I discovered its rich Gold Rush history, which you can explore through historic buildings and even a scenic railway ride like the White Pass & Yukon Route, offering breathtaking mountain views. It’s a perfect blend of adventure and history. And yes, don't miss that ice cream at Kone Kompany, it's a classic! Juneau: Whale Watching in Juneau was a definite highlight. Seeing those majestic creatures breach and play in their natural habitat is something I'll never forget. Keep an eye out for humpbacks and orcas! And of course, the MENDENHALL GLACIER VISITOR CENTER area offers stunning views and easy access to trails. I loved walking around, taking in the sheer scale of the glacier and listening to the ice crackle. There are various trails for all fitness levels, offering different perspectives of this natural wonder. Ketchikan: Beyond the ATV RIDING adventure which was super fun, Ketchikan is known as the 'Salmon Capital of the World' and has a strong Native Alaskan heritage. I found it fascinating to see the beautiful totem poles scattered throughout the city, telling ancient stories. It's a great place to immerse yourself in local culture and history while enjoying the scenic beauty. And after a day of exploring, sipping a drink at a local spot like Sourdough Cocktail Bar is the perfect end to a day! Essential Packing Tips for Your Alaska Summer Trip: Even in summer, Alaska weather can change on a dime! I learned to always pack layers: a waterproof and windproof jacket, fleece or wool sweaters, quick-dry pants, and comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are non-negotiable. Don't forget bug spray, sunscreen (even on cloudy days!), a good camera, and maybe even binoculars for wildlife spotting. Beyond the Itinerary: Foodie Delights! You absolutely HAVE to try the fresh seafood. Alaskan king crab, salmon prepared every way imaginable, and halibut fish and chips are simply divine. Each town has its own local favorites, so ask the locals for their hidden gems. I found some amazing fresh catches that weren't on my original plan! Whether you're cruising or staying in one spot, Alaska in the summer offers endless possibilities for adventure and breathtaking beauty. I hope this helps you plan your own unforgettable trip!
