What Serving the Community Looks Like

This week, we’re cooking for 170 people at the pantry, and I’m so grateful for the help and volunteers who make this possible.

We started with rice and pans ready for the oven, then moved on to making sausage and beans. I sautéed onions and garlic, thickened the sauce, and built layers of flavor using New England beans, stewed tomatoes, pizza sauce, Korean BBQ sauce for a sweet BBQ touch, Mexican hot sauce, and warm seasonings. The Italian sausages were baked, mixed into the sauce, and served over rice, with sautéed carrots in a butter rosemary sauce on the side.

This is what serving looks like week after week — taking what we have and turning it into something nourishing and beautiful so people can enjoy a warm meal.

If this kind of work speaks to you, we’re currently at risk of losing our building and could really use support.

You can donate or volunteer through the link in my bio, or comment below if you’d like more information.

Every bit of support matters 🤍

... Read moreVolunteering to cook for a community pantry has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've had. Preparing meals for a large group can feel overwhelming at first, but breaking down the process into manageable steps helps everything flow smoothly. For example, starting with staple ingredients like rice and carefully selecting seasonings can elevate even humble dishes into something special. I love experimenting with sauces and flavors that appeal to diverse tastes. Combining familiar elements such as stewed tomatoes and New England beans with unexpected touches like Korean BBQ sauce and Mexican hot sauce adds depth and excitement to the dish. Baking Italian sausages brings a savory richness that complements the layered sauce, while a simple side like sautéed carrots with butter and rosemary adds warmth and comfort. Beyond the cooking itself, the true joy is in knowing that these meals offer nourishment and hope to those who need it most. Serving regularly not only provides food but also fosters a sense of community and belonging. It's inspiring to see how food can bring people together and create connections. However, maintaining such a program requires ongoing support. Whether through donations, volunteering your time, or simply spreading the word, every contribution helps sustain this important service. If you're passionate about giving back through cooking or community work, consider reaching out to local pantries or volunteer groups. There's immense satisfaction in turning everyday ingredients into meals that feed both the body and soul.
