The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

He was forgiven a mountain of debt—but refused to forgive a man who owed him little. This parable is a warning: mercy received must become mercy given. God expects forgiveness, not just from Him—but through us.

Don’t choke someone over what God already covered for you.

Blessings to you—follow for more parables and kingdom truth.

... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to dive deeper into one of Jesus' most challenging yet profound parables: The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant, found in Matthew 18:23-35. When I first heard this story, it really made me uncomfortable, but that's often where the deepest lessons lie, right? The story starts with a king who decides to settle accounts with his servants. One servant owes him an astronomical sum—10,000 bags of gold! This is an amount so huge it's practically unpayable, truly a "mountain of debt." He begs for patience, and the king, full of compassion, cancels the entire debt. Imagine that relief! But then, this same servant goes out and finds a fellow servant who owes him a comparatively tiny sum: a hundred silver coins. Instead of showing the same mercy he just received, he grabs him, begins to "choke him," and demands immediate payment. When the fellow servant pleads for patience, just as he himself had done, the unforgiving servant refuses and throws him into prison. When the king hears about this, he's furious. He confronts the unforgiving servant, reminding him, "Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?" And then comes the grave warning: this is how the heavenly Father will treat each of us unless we forgive our brother or sister from our heart. This parable hits hard because it challenges us to truly reflect on our own capacity for forgiveness. We've all been forgiven so much by God, far more than anyone could ever owe us. The 10,000 talents represent our immeasurable debt of sin against a holy God, a debt we could never repay. The 100 denarii represent the comparatively small offenses others commit against us. The core message, as the parable concludes, is clear: "Mercy received must become mercy given." Forgiveness isn't optional in the kingdom; it's expected. It's a "heart check" on our own spiritual growth. It's easy to say we forgive, but truly letting go, especially when someone has deeply hurt us, is one of life's greatest challenges. I've personally struggled with holding onto grudges, thinking that by not forgiving, I'm somehow protecting myself or making the other person pay. But what this parable shows me is that holding onto unforgiveness only imprisons *me*. It chokes my own spirit and blocks me from experiencing the full grace God has for me. So, what can we do? First, acknowledge the immense forgiveness we've received. Second, pray for the grace to extend that same forgiveness to others. It's not about condoning their actions, but releasing ourselves from the burden of bitterness. It's a continuous process, but it's essential for "kingdom living." Let's choose to let go and live in the freedom of forgiveness, just as God has freed us.
