Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP

I’ve been to this National Park twice, in both extremes of weather. In 2016 as part of my Momma’s RV trip we drove the Million Dollar Highway in near blizzard conditions in an RV and made it to the park the next day. Visibility was low, and it was bitter cold. Then in 2018 as part of a cross country road trip we were back in the area, and we visited again. I got much better photos as we spent the afternoon driving around the park. It’s always been a park I want to go back to if only to explore the canyon and river that I’ve only ever seen from the rim.

BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON NATIONAL PARK
4/17 Edited to

... Read moreVisiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers a remarkable contrast between seasons, making it a unique destination for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers alike. From personal experience, driving the Million Dollar Highway during a near blizzard presented both challenges and unforgettable moments. The reduced visibility and biting cold created a sense of adventure and respect for the rugged landscape surrounding the canyon. Though the harsh weather limited the views, it highlighted the park's raw power and natural resilience during winter. On a return visit during warmer weather, the experience changes dramatically. The clear skies and longer daylight hours allow for extensive exploration along the canyon rim. Driving through the park in the afternoon provides picturesque vistas of the steep cliffs and the winding Gunnison River below. Wildlife is also more visible during these times, enriching the visit with opportunities to see birds of prey, bighorn sheep, and other native animals. For those planning a trip, it is crucial to consider the weather conditions and season, as access and activities can vary. Summer and early fall are ideal for hiking, kayaking, and photography, while winter brings tranquility and fewer visitors but requires preparation for snow and cold temperatures. The park's dramatic landscapes, marked by steep, dark walls carved by the Gunnison River, make it a favorite for those seeking dramatic natural scenery. Exploring beyond the rim, through guided tours or river trips, is highly recommended for an immersive experience. In summary, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park offers diverse experiences depending on the time of year. Whether braving winter conditions or soaking up summer's sunshine, the park's powerful beauty leaves a lasting impression and invites repeated visits to uncover all its secrets.
