Death Valley National Park

In her later years, my mother would want to go on road trips for her birthday. She loved Vegas and Laughlin, but she also wanted to explore other places. In 2015 for her 77th birthday, we did a road trip to Vegas then headed northeast and hit the national parks in Utah. Coming back, we did a big circle along the “Nation’s Loneliest Highway,” then headed back south to Death Valley National Park before heading home.

How beauty can be found in the deepest point in the US and its arid surroundings is still a mystery to me, but we found it. You saw it in the patterns of the sands, the colors of the rocks, the crystal formations of the Devil’s Golf Course, and in the life that survives in some of the harshest of landscapes. It’s truly inspiring.

... Read moreDuring my visit to Death Valley National Park, I was truly amazed by how life and beauty persist in such an extreme environment. One of the park’s most fascinating features is Badwater Basin, which lies 282 feet (85.5 meters) below sea level, making it the lowest point in North America. Walking across the vast salt flats there, you can see intricate, geometric patterns formed by the natural crystallization of salt over time. This unique terrain provides not only striking visuals but also a window into the geological processes that have shaped this region. Beyond the salt flats, the Devil’s Golf Course captured my attention with its sharp, jagged salt formations. The name itself hints at just how challenging this landscape is, as the terrain is so rough it’s joked that only the devil could play golf over it. These crystal structures shimmer under the sun, creating an otherworldly atmosphere that’s both beautiful and humbling. What struck me most was the surprising presence of wildlife and vegetation that manage to survive in Death Valley’s extreme heat and dryness. From hardy desert plants to small animals adapted to the conditions, their resilience adds to the park’s allure. Exploring the rock formations, sand dunes, and colorful canyons, I found that every corner held a glimpse into nature’s impressive adaptability. Traveling Death Valley also offers a peaceful solitude often missing in more crowded parks. The open spaces along the "Nation’s Loneliest Highway" combined with the quiet landscape give you a chance to reflect and appreciate the stark beauty of the desert. For anyone interested in geology, nature photography, or simply seeking a unique adventure, Death Valley National Park provides a memorable and inspiring experience.
