North Cascades National Park

When my mother died in 2019, I was so bereft that I was seriously depressed in the months following. Finally, I told my husband that we needed to go on a long road trip to get me out of the house and to see new things. So we packed up the car and the dogs and headed off to check off the Washington State National Parks.

After a wonderful drive up the Pacific Coast and a ferry ride, we headed to North Cascades National Park. You can’t feel sadness when you’re standing in the majesty of Diablo Lake and basking in its amazing colors made even more spectacular by the surrounding greens and peaks. Then you stand and ponder the glacial mountains surrounding you. Problems seem to fade away and you’re left speechless… or in some cases, waxing poetic…

... Read moreVisiting North Cascades National Park offers more than just stunning scenery; it provides a sanctuary for healing and reflection. During my trip, I found that standing by Diablo Lake, with its striking turquoise waters framed by jagged peaks and ancient glaciers, created a deep sense of peace that was hard to find elsewhere. The park's vast wilderness, with numerous hiking trails ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs, invites visitors to immerse themselves in nature’s quiet grandeur. One of the most rewarding experiences was hiking along the Cascade Pass Trail, which offers panoramic views of rugged mountains and sprawling forests. Encountering wildlife such as deer and various bird species heightened the sense of connection to the environment. It’s a place where the grandeur of glacially-carved valleys and the vibrant greens of temperate forests combine to soothe the spirit. Traveling to North Cascades also reveals the importance of planning to make the most of the visit. Remote and less crowded than many other national parks, it’s advisable to check weather conditions and park alerts before setting out. Camping in designated areas or staying in nearby towns can extend the experience, allowing more time to absorb the park’s calming atmosphere. For those who, like me, may be navigating difficult periods in life, North Cascades National Park serves as a reminder of nature’s restorative power. Moments spent overlooking Diablo Lake or gazing at the glaciers can foster introspection and gradually ease emotional burdens. Sharing this personal journey might inspire others to explore their local natural escapes or plan similar trips to find solace and rejuvenation in the wilderness.
