Pinnacles National Park
So this National Park was just a monument when I started really checking off the National Parks. I’d lived in California growing up and had never heard of this area even though we’d traveled on both sides of it for years. When my best friend from med school and I did our California National Parks trip last year, it was on the list to check off. The park is, in a lot of ways, still under development. It’s achieved the status of National Park, but the ranger even admitted that a lot of the infrastructure (trails, signs, etc) still needs to be established and placed. Still, we wandered around, took some photos, and I got my stamp. I’m sure the park will be further updated in the years to come.

Visiting Pinnacles National Park offers a unique experience distinct from the more famous national parks in California. What struck me the most was the park's raw and developing character. Even though it has achieved full national park status, many of its trails and visitor facilities are still being improved, giving visitors a true sense of exploration and discovery. One of the park’s highlights is its stunning rock formations, which arise dramatically from the surrounding landscape due to their location along the San Andreas Fault. These spires and pinnacles offer fantastic opportunities for rock climbing, photography, and bird watching. The park is home to several caves that provide a fascinating glimpse into the area's geology and history. My visit coincided with fewer crowds, allowing a more peaceful and personal connection with nature. Accessibility is gradually improving, with ranger staff actively working on adding signage and trail markers to enhance safety and navigation. This ongoing development means it’s an excellent destination for adventurers who appreciate a bit of ruggedness and spontaneity. The nearby town of Paicines serves as a quiet gateway to the park and offers a charming break spot. For those passionate about national parks and off-the-beaten-path destinations, Pinnacles National Park represents a promising alternative to more commercialized areas. Besides the traditional hiking routes, I recommend planning time for wildlife observation; the park is a sanctuary for condors and various other species. Overall, my experience here was rewarding not only because I added another park to my list but also because it felt like exploring a living, evolving natural monument. If you appreciate nature’s raw beauty and want to enjoy tranquility away from busier parks, Pinnacles National Park is well worth the visit. Be sure to check updated trail maps before arrival and bring plenty of water, as this area can be quite arid.
