Sequoia National Park
I had been to Sequoia National Park several times as a kid. If I could find the photos, there is one of us as kids running up to the base of one of the trees. We look like small army men approaching this enormous tree that disappears off the top of the photo. When my best friend from med school and I planned our California National Park road trip, I knew that we had to come back to Sequoia; one, so that I could get my stamp officially, and two, so that we could marvel in these amazing trees. To hear someone on the trail say, “It’s so touristy and full of posers influencers” made us sad. Yes, a lot of people were on the trails, on a Saturday, but what better escape from the heat of the city than the cool hilltops and meandering paths through the trees. We went on several other hikes off the beaten path where there were very few people… maybe they should have “roughed it” a little more and gotten out of their comfort zone…

Visiting Sequoia National Park never gets old. On my recent trip, I purposefully sought out trails less traveled to truly connect with the park’s natural beauty and get away from the weekend crowds. I recommend the Lakes Trail or Tokopah Falls hike, which offer stunning views and much fewer tourists. One of the most memorable moments was standing quietly beneath the colossal sequoias, feeling dwarfed yet humbled by their immense scale and age. For anyone planning a visit, timing can make a big difference. Early mornings or weekdays are ideal for a more solitary experience. Make sure to pack water and sturdy shoes, as even the easier trails can be rugged. Aside from hiking, take advantage of ranger-led programs that provide fascinating insights into the ecosystem and the significance of these magnificent trees. Overall, Sequoia National Park is more than just a typical tourist destination. It offers a refreshing break with its cool mountain air, breathtaking landscapes, and the humbling presence of nature’s giants. Whether you are a seasoned hiker or just looking for a peaceful day out in nature, the park has something rewarding to offer.
