Cavy capers!

The domesticated Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus) carries a lengthy relationship with humans! Having been domesticated in the South American Andes around 5000BC they are now a beloved pet AND a source of meat.

They are a rodent, but are found in the same family, Caviidae, as the world's largest rodent, the (downright adorable) Capybara. Izzy has three of them, and they seemed like very suitable critters to be hanging around the #fortnite loading area. We probably won't ever discuss eating our cute little pets, but I may forever be curious!

... Read moreGuinea Pigs, often affectionately called cavies, have been companions to humans for thousands of years, and their unique characteristics make them fascinating pets. What many might not realize is that these small rodents share a family with the giant capybara, the world's largest rodent. Capybaras are known for their gentle nature and surprisingly social behavior, often seen lounging peacefully near water. In my personal experience caring for cavies, their friendly disposition and distinct vocalizations make them delightful to observe. They thrive in groups, which is why many owners keep more than one to satisfy their social instincts. An interesting point to note is the balance between their role as pets and their historic use as a protein source in some cultures—a contrast that highlights changing human-animal relationships. Also, it’s intriguing how these creatures have found their way into modern digital spaces, such as being whimsically associated with popular games like Fortnite around the battle bus loading screen. This crossover between real-world pets and gaming communities showcases the versatility and appeal of cavies. For those considering adopting guinea pigs, it's crucial to provide a spacious habitat, a balanced diet rich in hay and fresh vegetables, and gentle handling to build trust. They require regular grooming and social interaction to stay healthy and happy. Observing their playful antics and occasional quirky behaviors can be genuinely rewarding. Overall, guinea pigs bring a unique blend of historical significance, biological intrigue, and joyful companionship, making them much more than just cute pets.

Salmon Crudo with ponzu
Salmon crudo with homemade ponzu, parsley infused olive oil, onion, chives and capers. The most refreshing summery entree. This is a restaurant quality dish that you can absolutely make at home - all you need is some good quality sashimi grade salmon, which most fish shops will be able to offer.
