Herbalist Reads

The most important thing about #herbalmedicine is you should have books surrounding you to constantly learn but also so you can have a reference. Your library should be abundant. Because herbal medicine isn’t a one fit all. Some herbs work good for someone people but may not work great for others.

National Geographic Herbal: 100 Herbs From the World's Healing Traditions by Mimi P. Hernandez is a great resource. One thing to note is that it doesn’t have every single herb known on earth (hence why multiple books is important) but it is detailed, but clear and easy to understand. It is full of illustrations and most importantly history and how to use the herbs.

It’s one of my favorites.

... Read moreOkay, so if you're anything like me, diving into the world of herbal medicine can feel a little overwhelming at first. There's so much to learn, and where do you even begin with all the books out there? That's why I wanted to share a bit more about why the "National Geographic Herbal: 100 Herbs From the World's Healing Traditions" has become such a cornerstone in my own journey. What truly makes this book stand out, especially for beginners, is its incredible clarity and accessibility. Mimi Prunella Hernandez has a fantastic way of breaking down complex information without ever dumbing it down. Each of the "100 Herbs From the World's Healing Traditions" is presented with such thoughtful detail – from its historical significance and cultural uses to practical applications and safety notes. I've found that many herbal books can be dense, but this one is genuinely a pleasure to read and easy to absorb. The illustrations, too, are a huge plus! They're not just pretty; they really help with identification and understanding the plant's characteristics, which is so crucial. And knowing that it has a Foreword by Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., just adds another layer of credibility to the wealth of information inside. I don't just read this book cover-to-cover; I actively use it as a reference almost daily. Whether I'm curious about a particular herb I've heard about or I'm trying to understand the traditional uses of a plant growing in my garden, I turn to it. It's a fantastic starting point for research because it gives you a solid foundation before you dive into more specialized texts. For example, if I wanted to learn about Chamomile, the book wouldn't just tell me it's calming; it would delve into its history in various cultures, how different parts are used, and even potential interactions. This depth allows me to cross-reference with other sources, building a more holistic understanding. Now, while the "National Geographic Herbal" is a phenomenal resource, it's super important to remember what the original post mentioned: herbal medicine isn't a one-size-fits-all, and one book isn't enough for a comprehensive library. Think of this book as your amazing foundational guide. To truly grow your knowledge, I've found it helpful to branch out into a few key areas. Firstly, consider a good field guide specific to your region. Knowing what grows naturally around you and how to ethically harvest it is invaluable. Secondly, look for books that focus on specific applications, like making tinctures, salves, or herbal teas. These practical guides help you move from theory to practice. Thirdly, explore different herbal traditions – Western herbalism, Ayurvedic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine – as they offer unique perspectives and approaches. Lastly, always seek out books that emphasize safety, dosages, and contraindications. Building a well-rounded library means having multiple perspectives and practical how-to guides. It’s an ongoing journey of learning and discovery, and each new book adds another layer to your wisdom. This approach ensures you're not solely relying on one source but building a robust and informed practice of your own. Happy reading and happy learning!

Fantastic advice! Thank you! I started with two books I purchased on Amazon and then gathered the rest at small bookstores for local foraging books, and thrift stores for herbal gardening books.

In herbalism you are constantly reading, constantly learning. Why? Because it’s important to know when where and how on any herb your take or recommend for people to take. The Herb Book gives you more history on the herb/plant as opposed to other books which focus more on what to do with them.
