... Read moreOh my goodness, you guys! Getting a baby tarantula like Little Maria has been such an incredible experience. When I first held her, she was just a tiny little spood, a beautiful small, dark tarantula, fitting perfectly on my open palm – it was love at first sight! She's a Brazilian Black tarantula, and they’re known for their stunning velvety black appearance and generally docile temperament, which makes them fantastic pets, even for those new to the tarantula world.
Watching her navigate her tiny enclosure, I can already see glimpses of her "childlike life." Baby tarantulas, also known as slings, are surprisingly delicate but full of instinct. They're constantly exploring, though sometimes it looks more like clumsy tumbling! For a little one like Maria, her current habitat is a small, secure container with plenty of moist substrate to burrow in. A tiny water dish with a few drops of water (or a cotton ball soaked in water) is essential, and a small hide makes her feel safe. It's fascinating to see her create her own little world, webbing up corners and exploring every inch.
Feeding time is always an adventure! Since she's so small, her meals consist of tiny prey items, like flightless fruit flies or pinhead crickets. It's truly amazing to watch her instincts kick in, stealthily pouncing on her meal. People often ask about the "childlike life" of a tarantula, and for slings, it’s all about growth and survival. They're constantly growing, and the most dramatic part of this journey is molting. When Maria sheds her skin, it's a vulnerable but vital process that allows her to get bigger. I make sure her environment is just right during these times—the humidity needs to be spot-on to help her shed successfully. It’s always a relief when I see her emerge from her old skin, looking fresh and a little bit bigger.
Brazilian Black tarantulas, or *Grammostola pulchra*, are relatively slow-growing compared to some other species, but their longevity makes them a long-term companion, often living for 15-25 years for females! From her current tiny size, Little Maria is expected to reach an impressive 6 to 8 inches when fully grown. Imagine that transformation! It will take a few years, with several molts along the way, for her to reach her adult size. Each molt brings her a step closer to that majestic, full-grown appearance. I’m so excited to document every stage of her journey, seeing her colors deepen and her personality develop. Even as slings, they show individual quirks – some are more reclusive, others are more active. Maria is definitely curious!
If you're considering a tarantula as a pet, especially a Brazilian Black, I highly recommend doing your research. They require specific care, but the rewards of observing these fascinating creatures are immense. There's a unique joy in nurturing a tiny life and watching it flourish. Don't let misconceptions about spiders scare you; tarantulas can be incredibly calm and captivating pets. Little Maria has already brought so much wonder into my life, and I can't wait to share more updates as she continues her amazing growth from a cute little sling to a magnificent adult tarantula!
So cute! I really want to get one!❤️
