Sketchbook of a mostly digital artist

2024/12/4 Edited to

... Read moreYou might be wondering why someone like me, who spends most of their time illustrating digitally, still clings to a good old physical sketchbook. Honestly, it's my creative sanctuary! When creativity feels like it's kicking my butt, my sketchbook is the first place I turn. There's something undeniably magical about the feel of pen on paper, a freedom that even the most advanced digital canvas can't quite replicate. For me, traditional sketching is all about breaking free from the perfectionism that digital art can sometimes impose. No 'undo' button means every line, every smudge, is a commitment – and that often leads to unexpected breakthroughs. It's fantastic for quickly capturing those fleeting ideas, whether it’s a dynamic pose for a new character or a rough concept for an abstract landscape. Before I even think about opening my digital art software, I'm usually scribbling character concepts with curly hair or figuring out the best way to draw a studded jacket in my sketchbook. It’s where my original characters (OCs) truly come to life on paper, letting me explore their expressions, intricate accessories, and even reptilian features without the pressure of a finished digital piece. My physical sketchbook isn't just a separate entity; it's a vital bridge to my digital work. Often, my ink drawings start as loose pink under-sketches in my book, then I refine them with black ink. These traditional sketches are then scanned or photographed and brought into my digital workflow. It’s like having a playground for my ideas. What kind of creative sketchbook ideas do I explore? Everything! From detailed character studies, like a robed figure or a character with large eyes and a necklace, to environmental sketches of a church or an upright piano. I love experimenting with different mediums too, like those vibrant yellow-orange ink drawings I sometimes do. If you're a digital artist feeling stuck, I highly recommend dedicating a portion of your sketchbook to pure experimentation. Try sketching characters in dynamic, aggressive poses, or focusing on facial features like freckles and expressive eyes. Sometimes I just doodle random figures or imagine new outfits for my OCs. The variety of sketches, from fanart (like my Splatoon 3 pieces!) to completely new creations, keeps my mind fresh. It’s fascinating to see how a simple black ink drawing over a pink under-sketch can evolve into a fully rendered digital piece. My sketchbook is truly where the groundwork for all my digital art OCs and illustrations begins. It's a low-pressure space to play and discover new artistic directions, ultimately making my digital creations richer and more imaginative. So, if you're a digital artist, don't underestimate the power of a physical sketchbook – it might just be the creative boost you need!
