#Adulting. Royals. #Choonsday
Walking along today, going to our destination. Suddenly, there was music. It was Lorde, singing the chorus to that massive tune, "Royals". Navigating the negative spaces on the sidewalk, walking respectfully through the living spaces of human beings, the words of the song hung in the bright sunshine like the Monday wash:
"We don't care/we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams".
Keep walking People are packing up. Time to move to another location. Not indoors. Another spot, another space of pavement or concrete or asphalt. A square to claim, if only for a few minutes, half an hour, an hour- if lucky.. If infelicitous circumstances prevail, in the worst case they park their things, awaiting the night to fall.
"But every day's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece/jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash"....
The lyrics of the song mirror the activity on the sidewalk. Not Cristal, but cups of water being shared around to quench thirst in the heat. Not a Maybach but a bicycle with a cart attached to transport items. A small bracelet of diamantes adorned a wrist. A picture of home for those far from the concept of home. An adorable little Frenchie, old but dignified, wore a collar with jewels.
"We don't care/we aren't caught up in your love affair"..
Others, more affluent, more elevated in their status of this world, hurried by, impatient at having to make some concession to the lives unspoiled before them. They hurried onwards, their futures bright, their bank accounts substantial. Sometimes, they clutch the mermaid. At other times, they hold small, chic bags from Louis Vuitton, talismans against the collapse of their carefully constructed dreams.
They know that they are the monarchs of this realm.
The others?
"And we'll never be royals(royals)/
it don't run in our blood....."
Not a royal, either. We keep walking, thinking about life's little laughs.
Life lesson. Class dismissed.
