plowing snow

gotta be thankful for good neighbors

... Read moreWow, winter’s really hitting us hard this year, isn't it? After battling countless snowstorms, I’ve picked up some essential tips that have seriously changed my snow-plowing game. You know that feeling when you look out and see a fresh blanket of snow, and your heart just sinks thinking about clearing the driveway? I used to dread it, but with a few smart strategies, it's become much more manageable. And honestly, having a clear path makes such a difference, not just for me but for anyone visiting or passing by – it really makes you appreciate those good neighbors who keep their paths clear! Here’s what I’ve learned to make snow plowing less of a chore and more of a quick, efficient task: Before You Even Start: Preparation is Key! Check the Forecast (and Your Fuel Tank!): Don't wait until the snow is piled high. Keep an eye on the weather and make sure your plow, truck, or snowblower has enough fuel (and oil!) before the flakes even start falling. There's nothing worse than running out mid-job. Mark Your Territory: Before the first significant snowfall, I always place driveway markers. Those little reflective rods are lifesavers for knowing where your grass ends and your driveway begins, especially when snow banks get high. This saves your lawn (and your plow blade!) from accidental damage. Inspect Your Equipment: A quick check of your plow blade, hydraulic lines, lights, and tires (if it's a vehicle plow) can prevent frustrating breakdowns. For snowblowers, check the augers and chute. A well-maintained machine works faster and safer. Dress for Success (and Warmth!): Layers are your best friend. Waterproof outer gear, warm gloves, and a hat are non-negotiable. Visibility is also crucial, so consider a bright-colored jacket, especially if you're plowing near roads. During the Storm: Smart Plowing Techniques Start Early & Often: If you get heavy, continuous snow, it's often easier to do multiple lighter passes rather than one huge push. This prevents the snow from compacting and becoming too heavy to move. Choose Your Pushing Direction Wisely: Windrows: Try to push snow to areas where it won't block mailboxes, fire hydrants, or neighbor's driveways. Consider where runoff will go when it melts. The "V" Technique: For wider areas, pushing snow into a "V" shape can help you gather more snow and push it to the sides efficiently. Backdragging for Tight Spots: When backing up, drop your plow blade slightly to pull snow away from garage doors or tight corners. It's great for finishing touches. Overlap Your Passes: Make sure each pass slightly overlaps the previous one to avoid leaving annoying ridges of snow that freeze hard. Deal with Heavy, Wet Snow: This stuff is a beast! Go slower, take smaller bites, and clear your chute frequently if you're using a snowblower to prevent clogs. A little spray lubricant on the chute can help too. After the Job: The Clean-Up Final Touches: Once the main plowing is done, walk around and clear any remaining snow from walkways, steps, or around parked cars. A good shovel is still essential for these detail areas. Clean Your Equipment: Don't put your plow or snowblower away covered in snow. Clear off any ice and snow, and for plows, consider applying a rust preventative if it's going into storage for a while. Safety First, Always: Remember, plowing can be strenuous. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and be mindful of your surroundings, especially if you're operating heavy machinery. Following these tips has made my winter mornings so much less stressful. It's not just about getting the job done, but doing it safely and efficiently, leaving a clear path for everyone. Sometimes, a good plowing job can even be a way to show you're a good neighbor, especially if you lend a hand to someone who needs it. Stay warm and happy plowing!
