Identify Your Idols
Lord, I have idols and I pray I make them less important day by day. Reduce me so I can trust you more. Please show me your mercy. It’s true we don’t deserve you, but the mystery of the gospel is that you love us. Help me see you more today and the next and the next. Amen

In our complex lives, various idols can pull us away from our spiritual focus. These can manifest as careers, wealth, relationships, or even personal achievements. The Bible warns us against the dangers of idolatry, urging us to reassess what we prioritize. Proverbs chapter 3 emphasizes the importance of trusting in the Lord rather than our own understanding. Trusting in God for wisdom allows us to diminish the influence of false idols, leading to a more fulfilled life grounded in faith. When we idolize anything other than God, it clouds our judgment and distorts our perspective, making us vulnerable to anxiety and despair. Embracing the gospel offers us a remedy for idolatry, reminding us that we do not need to justify ourselves through worldly success. Instead, we are freely justified by faith in Jesus (Romans 3:21-24). Through prayer, we can seek guidance to identify and overcome these idols. Like the Israelites, who had to turn away from their idols to fully experience God's grace, we too must root out anything that detracts from our relationship with Him. By surrendering our idols—whether they be ambitions, relationships, or societal expectations—we can reclaim our focus on God's mercy and love, truly finding our identity in Him.
